Family OOT

Family OOT

If your DH has family outside of New York do you feel like any vacation you ever take for the rest of your life will be to go visit them?

DH and I have never been on a just the two of us trip together. The last trip we took, before we were married, was to NY to visit my parents and we never left Our next trip is to visit his family in January (we will definetely be leaving). DH, in his wonderful world, has trips planned to Ireland for weddings in 2009 and 2010. The itinerary is already being written up

So ladies with family OOT are we doomed to a life of visits as vacations?

No they shouldn't be yes part of your vacation time will automatically be to visit them. You should make it a point that one vacation a year is just the two of you. Remember visiting family is not vacation - that is what I tell me dh (his parents live in Ireland)

All of our vacations are used to visit his family too. Our honeymoon is the only trip we've taken just the two of us, and just for fun. His parents live in Pittsburgh and his relatives in Quebec, so those are the only places we go. We'd like to do more, but we just can't afford it and I don't get enough vacation time at my job.

That is where DH family lives too. I like going over to see our friends and family but I would love to actaully go on a honeymoon with a white sandy beach and umbrellas (ellas ellas) in my drink instead we will settle for rain, cows and pubs it's not so bad but not as relaxing as a just the two of us getaway.

Tell them to come visit you sometimes... You don't always have to go to them.

OMG!!! I feel your pain...DH's sister...his Dad & Mom (divorced...so there's 2 vacations shot) all live OOT! It's like anytime we go anywhere it is either to see them...or they come meet up with us somewhere. There should be a support group for us..hahaha.

Yessssss that is what i mean. I'm not complaining about going I just wish it wasn't the same old thing everytime and sometimes a little getaway without any family would be good.

The supposrt group is a great idea I think we shouldl meet at the bar for happy hour everyday of the week.

Make them stay in a hotel room and do not, under any circumstances allow them to paint anything in your house.

4 day staying limit, too.

i feel your pain. DH is from ireland and bc of his status, cant travel there yet. so i totally understand our first trip once he can travel will be to ireland, but i too am concerned that we wont take many other vacations. i am DYING to go on a cruise but alas....it will have to wait. sadly we are poor so one vacation a year will be it.

Wow we have a lot in common DH just got his greencard 2 weeks ago. Going through the whole immigration process was more stressful than the wedding process.
We originally planned to go on a honeymoon as soon as the card came but we wound up booking a trip to Irealnd. I think our honeymoon just keeps getting pushed back further and further. Maybe you and I can go on a cruise together and send the boys home together.

You should plan trips to Europe every time you go visit his family that way you get to visit his family plus yuo'll get a vacation. For example your first trip could be a tour of Ireland. Go to the city where his family is from and stay there for two days then start your tour and finish it off by leaving from his family's home. The next trip could be to Ireland/England, then Ireland/France, then Ireland/Spain. Plus you'll save on hotels the few nights you spend with his parents.

In the four years I dated DH before we got married, I went to Ireland with him on vacation three times. It was nice to see his family but two weeks spent in his town is not going to cut it anymore.

I recently made DH agree to the idea posted above. Everytime, we go back to Ireland we have to go to another place in Europe for four or five days. I figure we can get cheap flights on Easy Jet or Ryan Air. And I get to pick since he keeps picking Derry!! haha. First up is Barcelona. I cannot wait!

Oh, and while he agreed to this plan, he actually asked if we could take his Mom with us to Barcelona so that he could spend as much time as possible with her. (mamma's boy).

Re: Family OOT

this is a perfect situation! I would LOVE to have your dilemma.
I would HAPPILY agree to go to Ireland for every vacation, followed by a week spent in a different European country each time. FIrst France, then Italy, followed by Spain, etc. etc.........

What a wonderful life!
