Re: For newlyweds who are still renting
Yabbo, I am so scared. My parents kind of live in the suburbs, and I hated it. I like being able to walk wherever I need, and not needing to drive anywhere, and having the flexibility of the subway (even if its stinky).
And I don't know which NYC suburb will make my commute only 45 mins total. (excluding the bad ones, like Newark)

Alina,
my sentiments exactly! i don't care to live in a great big house and have to commute to work for 2 hours!

Re: For newlyweds who are still renting
I own my own house and my father still makes comments about how I spend my money on 'junk'. So dont think that will end when you have your own house.
I could not live in the suburbs. I know a lot of people who have made the switch and most say they are happy although i cant believe they all are. I hate to drive so it can never happen. Id rather have a small house.

Re: For newlyweds who are still renting
My Dad is always busting our you-know-what to buy- and honestly- I don't feel like dealing with it and we don't have the money. But more importantly there really is no place we really love right now and we do NOT want to move to the Island.
stef...my mom grew up in Brooklyn and has been living in the suburbs for almost 40 years...and she still wants to go back...
she wouldn't drive for the first 5 years of living in LI...she would make my dad do all the driving...that she has gotten over...but she still dreams of going back

Re: For newlyweds who are still renting
No, ours know we aren't rushing & saving still. I often think Alina if I will go nuts being out of 'the city' (Queens) (My DH job may move to Yonkers so we want to stay put for a while too.
The whole 'where' thing is a HUGE question mark, but DH would like a nice house with lawn and back yard. And I would like to live in a 'town', where there is a major street with all kinds of retail/restaurants, etc.
we're sort of thinking jersey in a few years, b/c parents live in NY and Phila, so this is kind of in between but not crazy far. LI for now is not an option b/c it would significantly increase distance from parents.
And while living in a same town is a 'no, no', I also don't want to be really really far!!!

Re: For newlyweds who are still renting
I rented when I first got married for about 7-8 months. I stayed in my old apt in Astoria. We were contented there but we knew we wanted a bigger house, had the money saved and want to start a family eventually in a bigger space in a more surberban atmosphere. our parents never pushed us - but my parents still rent! lol
The adjustment is not easy from city girl to surberbia - at least for me. I am a total city girl. First not having a driver license has been tough because I totally lost most of my independence and this is so tough. I am working on getting it and I will have a car (we just bought one - so we have 2 cars) just have to have the free time for lessons and practice. Where I live I can't walk to anything - not even a bodega or grocery store and that is so foreign to me. The hardest thing for me is being on the LIRR schedule. I am so use to oming and going as I please and still only being a 30 minutes or less from home! This really bothers me a lot and is taking the longest to get use to. The longer commute wasn't that bad of an adjustment - surprisingly...it is just the schedule that bother me (and I went from 30 minutes to about 1hr 15-20 mins. door to door). Also, having neighbors and being neighborly - is a new and interesting concept. Everyone being in your business and having to be all nicey nice - weird!
But I am so happy now that I own a home. Home ownership is new and overwhelming but I love being a homeowner!! I love our new space, I love being in a neighborhood and it has been a nice change of pace. Although, when something breaks, I miss the super! lol
Edited to add: Big Change in Food and time things stay open to! So different. One of the first nights DH and I drove out at 9pm on a weekday and tried to grab dinner and so much was closed. We were in shock. Also, I like variety in food and I don't get that much in LI. I feel like everything is Italian, seafood or chinese/japanese! And hardly anything delivers!

Oh god, this would so be me. I think I live in the BEST AREA in the world. Perfect combination of surburban area with tree lined streets but also tons of good restaurants and things to do; a short train ride to Manhattan; backyard and parking. Why would I move? Now my husband is a different story - he would love to live in NJ. No way.

Re: For newlyweds who are still renting
Its not the parents its the hubby who wants to move in to a house like yesterday. I am in no rush. I love the city, my church, my job, my life and the best subway system in the world Yes I do drive so that is no worries for me. The suburbs do nothing for me. If I want the suburbs I will go visit my mom. I am a city girl at heart.

No.
They know what our plans are.
We are on a 2 year plan to buy a home, that may or may not be in NY.

Same here but ours is a 7 year plan. That's when DH can retire and get full pension benefits. We don't plan to buy around here.

Re: For newlyweds who are still renting
Alina: Dont move to the suburbs b/c of hte schools. Where you are living now is in the district of one of the best public schools in NYC. Those yuppies want the best for their kids and that is part of the reason why the slope is so popular now.
Its not an immediate concern for me (b/c im not sure if i want children) but if I do have them, I would not think twice about sending them to public grade school. High School is slightly different but there are plenty of good options once you get to that point.
