Do your parents push you towards home/apt. ownership (regardless of your own wishes)?
How do you deal with that?
Also, for those city girls who moved to the suburbs, how is/was the adjustment?

Re: For newlyweds who are still renting
The high school there is a bit on the sketchy side but in 13 years - who knows. The grade schools are very good. And this is from people who dont even let their children cross the street alone...im sure they would not put their child in a school that was less than excellent.

we have the same problem, i am a city girl through and through, and DH wants a house with a lawn and backyard deep in NJ or LI. i get depressed just thinking about it!
Of couse a compromise on my part would be nessesary for the kids' sake!

Re: For newlyweds who are still renting
My cousin lives in Bklyn, williamsburg has a nice size back yard. Both her kids went to the public schools and she has no intention of leaving
Her commute to NYC is 10 minutes
There are plenty of nice areas in qns, bklyn that you can have the grass and the convenience of the city close by

Re: For newlyweds who are still renting
I have to say - you do get use to the suberbia and I am starting to like it. I was someone who always said they would never leave the city and didn't think I could survive in LI.....those towns like Whitestone and Bayside seemed like living out of the city and the countryside to me! But like others my DH was dead set against raising a family in a borough (even though he was raised in one - but SI - which seems simlar to LI to me). We had to figure out a place to go we would both agree on. We did this way before we got engaged. He always thought he would live in NJ and I said no way - so we settled on LI together. Although it is an adjustment and not for everyone - I am slowly getting use to it and I bet some of you girls will too!

Re: For newlyweds who are still renting
I live in Brooklyn and have a yard. Its not a huge forrest or anything but its more than enough to have kids play in it and have a dog, etc.. Brooklyn is full of places that have nice yards.

Re: For newlyweds who are still renting
I lived in Brooklyn until I was 16. My backyard was huge! My friend Jennifer's front yard is so big..you can't see her house from the street. A house a few houses down has an inground pool. I wish I had a yard like that in Long Island! We lived in the Windsor Terrace section of Brooklyn.

Re: For newlyweds who are still renting
OMG..I loved Steffy's!! My Aunt lives on Vanderbilt and East 4th. Did you ever go to Sal's on East 3rd and Vanderbilt. I would get Italian ices from there and all sort of Junk food!
I went to IHM. I also went to PS 154 near Key Food.

Yes, Sals was the only one left once Steffy closed down. (Although I barely remember steffys since I was so young and then we moved away for a while)
I went to IHM for 2nd, 3rd and 4th grade - PS 154 for 5th and 6th!!

Re: For newlyweds who are still renting
Alina, I grew up in Manhattan- W 87th Street. LOVED every second of it!!! I couldn't imagine my life not being in the city. I'm in Bayside now w/ Hubby & love it here just as much. My commute to NYC is the shortest it's been in years. 26 minutes to Penn!!! I bought an apt. in New Rochelle- that was 1 hr & 10 mins. door to door. We hope to eventually buy a house in LI (DH actually wants to move out of state) but not for a while. I really want a nice home w/ stairs!!! I've never lived in a home w/ stairs!!! I'm excited for the future, although, there's no place like home. We go out to eat in Manhattan more than we use to. More variety! I'm sure whatever you want, there's a compromise b/t you and hubby.

Re: For newlyweds who are still renting
I'm one of the lucky ones. Our parents don't push us to buy a house for two reasons:
1. They know we don't have the money right now. 2. They know we don't want the responsibility right now either.
Although I'm starting to really get the house itch pretty badly. After the new year we are going to sit down and see what we can do about paying off debt (school/car loans) and saving a serious chunk of change over the next 2 years.

Did you live on Vanderbilt or East 4th. MY uncle lives on Vanderbilt 2 houses in from the corner between East 4th and 5th. They moved in after you probably already left.
My sisters exboyfriend lives 2 houses in from Vanderbilt on East 4th. His name is Frank.
It is weird. Nobody I speak to knows where Windsor Terrace is.
