From the highest high to a pretty low low...

From the highest high to a pretty low low...

Ladies, I could use a little support from anyone who has any experience at all with this. My parents told me Friday that they went to their lawyer and are getting a divorce. I can't say that I am in shock as they have been miserable for as long as I can remember. I just am so concerned about it because I dont think either of them will be able to live on their own. They are in a pretty bad financial place right now (and it's totally my dad's fault.) He decided he is moving to florida because it is cheaper there and they are selling the house. My mom is only a secretary and I am afraid that she won't be able to find a place on her own. I know it is for the best, but I am so angry and scared for my mom. I just keep thinking 'What will i do around the holidays?' or as much as I dont really like my dad (i love him obviously because he is my father) what happens if he gets sick and we are in NY and he is in Florida? (he is 68...not like he is getting younger.) Ugh this *****. I just needed to vent i think since I can't tell any of my 'non-internet' friends of family at my parents request. Thanks ladies

Yea, divorce unfortunately is a very common occurrence. I'm sorry you have to go through it at all. I'm sure it's life altering at any age. My parents split when i was 3. Lost half my family.... literally.
Just be there for both parties and continue to keep your own marriage happy and healthy. You will be fine. I'm sorry for your hardships right now though.

So sorry to hear about their situation and the stress it's putting on you!!!

My parents divorced when I was 12, so it was a totally different world then, but if you ever want to talk about your feelings about it, I'm totally here for you and would be happy to!!!!

As far as affording to live, they'll make it work. Living for 1 means being able to downscale and stuff, so your mom will be able to plan out a life that works for her where she is also happy. With holidays and being so far away... that also will grow easier with time, and you'll work out ways to make it work so you still feel close to each other even with the physical difference.

For me, moving to NC was a really huge change -- my dad and I are really close -- but we talk nearly every day on video chat through gtalk (my dad's 63 and he's good with that stuff!) so it really isn't like things have changed that much. Visits are even more special because they're less frequent. And family in FL means reasons to take trips, which is always a good thing (my whole family other than my parents are down there).

It's definitely a shock, and worth being sad and troubled over the whole thing, but I know you are a strong person with a brand new family of your own to create a life with, and you will all get through this and be stronger from it!!!!

Big hugs!!!!

I am so sorry to hear this! I have been through divorce with my parents and it is incredibly difficult.. I can also relate to the whole financial thing..When my stepfather passed away he was the only income in my mom's home and it has been really hard for her to support herself and my brother. Luckily, she has been able to pay her bills thus far but I worry about her and my brother all the time. If you ever need anyone to talk to, feel free to let me know. I definitely know how hard this whole ordeal can be!

Oh, Lauren...I am so sorry you are going through this. Divorce is NEVER easy on the children...no matter what age they are. My parents divorced when I was only 6 months old and it has been hard for 26 years of my life. Although your situation is different...I understand what you are going through. It is normal to worry about your parents and how it is going to be for them.

Sorry you have to go through this. I know people who are in not so great relationships, but are still together because they cannot afford to be apart. Does your Mom have anyone she can move in with? A divorced friend, relative, an apartment in someones house where she can rent for cheap? Everything works itself out. Although they are not in the best financial position right now, thigns will turn around, and your parents may find themselves happy and satisfied once everything is said and done. I hope for happiness to you and your family.

So sorry to hear this. I know its hard but you and your parents will get through this. I worry all the time about my mom (she never remarried after she was divorced from my dad 30 years ago). However, she makes it work. Your mom will too. It's nice that your parents have such a caring daughter.

It's very difficult but you need to tell yourself that this is a decision your parents made - it's their lives. You can support and be a shoulder to cry on, but you have to let the weather it themselves. I guess it's kind of like having kids. You want to protect them but you can't.

I wish I had a better answer for you or a magic wand to make it all better.....

I'm so sorry you are going through this, I know its a really difficult situation. I don't have personal experience, but I see what DH goes through everyday coming from divorced parents and its definitely tough.

As far as the living situation, I know there are a lot of questions right now, but just know when there's a will there's a way. Your mom will figure it out, it will take time and the best thing you can do is support and help her. I'll keep your family in my thoughts and prayers.
