girls that are house hunting...

i cant believe with the market the way it is people are still asking ridiculous amounts of money for some crappy houses.......

has this been your experience too or is it just DH and I???

we looked at this one house the entire house was crooked....it was higher in the middle and sloped down to each side and the woman who owned said its 'no big deal just cosmetic stuff'

hello!!!!! that is not cosmetic!!!!!! that is a major structural problem!!!

ok, ready?

you get on the LIE and drive to east bumfuck and you can buy a beautiful 4 bedroom, victorian style home with a granite kitchen and hardwood floors on .75 acres for 369k.

East Bumbfuck never looked so good.

When DH and I were looking last year, it was the same thing. House prices jumped so much and it's just ridiculous. Everyone got reassessed for 2009-2010 (this is just the exterior) and I'm pretty sure it's public knowledge by now. Our house value dropped $70k from what it was worth in 2008-2009. It's disgusting. So unless these people did major renovations to their homes inside, it's not worth it and they are going to have a hard time selling. Clearly people don't watch any of the HGTV shows to get their homes sold!

people get really attached to their houses & think that there houses are more amazing than they are. I've seen soooo many bad houses over the years its not funny.

Sometimes these houses need to sit on the market in order for people to get some perspective.

Sorry that you guys are having a tough time

Re: girls that are house hunting...

I am not house hunting, but i check mlsli.com all the time, and from what i have noticed is that prices have dropped slightly but the houses that are on the market are not in good shape, wether cosmetic and/or structual

What i think is that people that have the good homes are holding off from selling in this market cause they know they will not get decent money for it, or what they think their house is worth so they are simply not listing them.

most of the houses i have seen in my area for sale, are corner lots with no yard, big time fixers, or on main roads or near busy parkways or highways.

Keep searching, and looking every single day, check the new listings all the time too so you can get a jump on something new on the market

I haven't been house hunting, but I have just been looking to see what was out there, and my god. They want $450k for something that looks like a basement apartment, an OLDDD @$$ kitchen, and a dirty house. It just makes me sick to think that they are asking the money they do for some of these houses.

I just bought a house a few weeks ago. There is so much crap out there and they ask way too much for it. Be patient though, we saw about 25-30 houses and eventually found one that we really liked - and now we live there!

That's where we live now (We rent) b/c we can't afford anything else! DH grew up in Commack and I grew up in Northport so to be all the way out in Selden is starting to take it's toll after 3+ years of driving out and then having to leave parties, dinners, etc by a certain time b/c it takes 30 - 45 minutes to get home.

Its disgusting! Its more sad than anything really. 400,000 buys you crap here. We aren't buying a home this year but we have been down to NC a few times in the past year. 400,000 buys you a brand new home, with 4 or 5 bedrooms, and I am not talking about living in the middle of no where this is right in the research triangle park, after we graduate school we are out of here, unless something changes here, which I doubt it will. Until than I like what our dollar can buy else where

This is home we fell in love with 360,000, yearly taxes 1600

I'm moving to NC!

I don't think DH and I can afford to buy a house here in NY let alone LI. This house would go for over $800K in NY!!!!

We love it there, they actually call its Yankee relocation town. LOL, So many people from NY, the only thing I'll miss is this cold weather. Other than that, property taxes are so low, and the schools are good. Its very family centered there, so many different activities for families to do. Your dollar goes much further.

Re: girls that are house hunting...

well we finally found a house we both like alot & about to go contract this week. we have been looking for a long time. & honestly depending on the area we haven't noticed a big drop in price. this house is move in condition. there are a few things (minor) that need to be done but not right away. we were both undecied because the owners were only willing to come down $15K but we didn't want to pass up this opportunity. right now we are living in very small 1BR apt. & its very tight. there is alot of crap out there, but just have to be patient. we have been looking for 2 yrs!!!

for awhile we did consider relocating out of state. however, right now we can't leave our parents behind. maybe one day but not now.

also, i agree with checking the MLSI everyday. i did that as part of my morning routine. finally this house really caught my eye.
