i'm glad you posted this- dh never used to work late- but the last 2-3 weeks he has been- they are putting the crunch on his department- he does not get overtime- he is salary only

i have been just trying to have something there for him to eat when he gets home, dvr his favorite shows & be there if he needs to vent- but its tough because he is absolutely exhausted and very cranky

My DH's normal working hours are 9-6:30, sometimes later (he works in the bond market)... but since he's in Manhattan, he doesn't usually get home until 8-8:30. Not as late as 9:30, but it still s ucks. I've gotten used to eating dinner late (around 9 or 9:30) every night, b/c that is the only time we really can spend together. He's usually so tired that we'll eat dinner and then within the hour he's ready for bed! It does stink but we just try to make up for it on the weekends. We make sure we have a date night every weekend so we can kinda 'catch up' a little.

This is exactly why it bothers me..He's cranky when he gets home and goes to bed almost immediately. Its horrible. I eat by myself most nights and I feel so lonely. My dh gets salary also..but with commission so he is trying to get his sales up. I think its great that he is so driven..but its too the point that it might be too much..

Re: girls who's dh works late...

My DH works nights often. I get off work around 5, but he leaves at 4:30. Then he works until anywhere from 12:30 - 3:30 am. I try to stay up to spend some time w/ him, but I have to be up early for work the next day.

It suckss sometimes, but we try to make sure we spend time together when he is off. I do like my time alone sometimes though- its when I catch up on my DVR shows or read.

Before the wedding he was working 80-90 hours a week and running himself down so much that he was getting chest pains (he didnt tell me about that until after the wedding)

There are times when he works a double shift (14-18 hrs a day) so I yell at him that he NEEDS to just leave if he is tired or run down. Yeah, we need $$ for a house, but its not worth killing yourself over.

thats exactly how I feel!!!!!!!!!!! He works so much that I worry (double shifts) and I just don't think its worth it. We want another larger house (if we ever want kids one day, lol) but I feel like its to the point where he is breaking his back to get there. Its not fair..

I think its a guy thing. They feel like they need to provide for their family. Its a great quality, but they just dont get that we need time w/ them and worry about them (that's our wife thing, I guess)

Re: girls who's dh works late...

Me too! I feel so bad the days DH works 8am-8pm, with an hour drive each way. I work late hours too, and long days sometimes, but I always feel so bad. I know he is busting his butt for us. I usually make something he really likes for dinner when he works late, so he can at least have a home cooked warm meal when he gets home. I will wait to eat with him most of the time too.

I feel your pain. Dh works 2 jobs and sometimes he doesnt get home until about 9:30. He eats dinner, showers and then hes off to bed. Its very frustrating because I never spend any time with him..and he overworks himself. Hes always in pain and complaining about being in pain...and thers not much I can do about it. I feel really bad for him....so I can def. relate

Re: girls who's dh works late...

My DH is sooooo work-focused. He always has been and it's something I learned to deal with, but for awhile, he was just doing his one job and then coming home - which was nice. Years ago, he had his own business and it wasn't ever doing well (which is why he gave it up) but he worked 16-18 hours every day, including Saturdays, when he had that. That reallllly ******.

Now, since I have lost my job, he picked up some side work (he does autobody) and he'll work from 8-5 at his regular job, and most days, goes right to his friend's shop to work on the side job. He gets in at 12 or 1, then he's gotta be up at 7. It really stinks, and he says he's doing it because I am out of work, but I think he would be doing it anyway - he says he doesn't like it but he does (not the late hours, the work itself I mean). Maybe he's doing it because he wants to get us more money, but even if I had a job I think he'd do it.

It's very lonely. I was out all day today, and now I am home, and he's not. I am eating leftovers later but have not much to do at all.

We should have a 'my-DH-is-working-late-so-I-am-going-out-with-the-girls-from-liw-in-the-same-boat-as-me' night sometime soon

Re: girls who's dh works late...

my DH works weird hours. He teaches lessons during the day while Im at work, and then he goes to the recording studio at really weird times. Every sunday he leaves at 11am to go there and doesn't get home till Im already at work on Monday. So that stinks. And then he goes a few nights during the week but always at different times. Sometimes he leaves at like 10pm and then they work through the night. Ogther times he goes in the afternoon and comes home at like midnight or the next morning. But then he will have 3 or 4 nights in a row randomly that they arn't in the studio so I see him a bunch. It just depends. But I hate sleeping alone. It gets soooo hot in our apartment and I refuse to open the windows when he is gone. Our apt is next to the lower roof so I get scared someone will try to come in... LOL.

Re: girls who's dh works late...

DH works late sometimes, and its usually a last minute thing, so he doesn't know and doesn't tell me until I already started dinner. THAT frustrates me beyond belief bc I hate that he would have to eat something cold.. I just wish his bosses would tell him in the morning like your staying late, then no big deal... But I miss him constantly, and he hates when he works so late because he doesn't get to see the baby at all that day... But now when he gets home he gives the baby a bath by himself, so they get time alone together, its pretty cute

I really think doing a date night will do wonders! Every other week DH and I have a date night, and its nice to get dressed up and going out together, like we're dating again

Re: girls who's dh works late...

DH works in the city and its rough. Most nights he isn't home until 9:10-10:30 (depending on the train he gets). I hate it. With this economy he can't slack and work and leave early. I feel bad because he leaves her at 7:30 in the morning. Its such a long day. I know he working hard for us so we can save for a house and have a baby. We are ttc now and I am hoping by the time we have a baby that he will be able to work a slightly less crazy schedule.

Re: girls who's dh works late...

My DH owns his own business and right now is his busy season. So this week he hasn't been home earlier than midnight. He also always works 6 day work weeks so we only have SUndays to spend doing things together. Also, during the spring and summer is when he starts to travel on weekends for work. Its definetly hard, but I am just happy that he has his business still with the way the economy is. Like another poster said, maybe a date night once a week (even if you stay in ) would help to reconnect.

I know exactly how you feel. I always get out at 5 and it's tough waiting around for DH and trying to plan dinners so we can at least eat together. It is tough but there's really nothing special I do to deal. I guess I started watching more TV and reading a lot more just to help the time pass. I make plans with some friends every once in a while but everyone is so busy right now it's difficult, especially on weeknights. We should start a support group!
