Got laid off

Got laid off

I worked in the magazine industry selling ad space and was the 2nd to last hired. They laid off the girl who was hired after me in october and then I received the bad news on Monday.

I know this has happened to quite a few girls on the 08 board, any advice in this economy?

I can't decide whether to go to grad school for teaching or try something completely different. A few of my teacher friends say it's just as difficult to get a job there. I'm fed up with the Devil Wears Prada BS that goes on in my industry and the entire industry seems to be going down the tubes ( with mags folding every month).

It s*cks being laid off a month and a half after my wedding! But I guess it couldve been worse, it could've happened before!

And being at home all day is BORING.

aww... i'm so sorry to hear that. What a pain! Are you able to collect unemployment for a while? I know it's gone up a LOT with this economy the way it is. They've even began giving more extensions on unemployment checks than usual.

I hope you find something soon

I'm so sorry!!!!!

As far as teaching...to me you can sum it up in your answer to this question...do you love kids??? Do you love to teach others? If you do, then teaching is for you. I've been teaching for 13 years and still love it but it can be incredibly stressful....the only thing that gets me through this stress is that I still love the kids. If you don't love kids you will be very unhappy...
just some very honest advice, hope it wasn't too harsh!!!

I absolutely ADORE kids. I was a nanny for 4 years in college part time. What I'm asking is more if you like teaching and if it's hard to get a teaching job in this economy.

Re: Got laid off

im sorry to hear that you got laid off... i have a bunch of friends who are teachers and alot of them are having trouble finding jobs. Unless you ont mind working in the city.

i dont know first hand i just know what they tell me. If your looking for a def. job. go for the fields that will always need employees. like health care, and law enforcement.

I sold ad space for a large women's magazine. I've been in magazines my whole career (all 4 years of it! lol) but magazines are losing $ big time. I went to college for broadcast journalism but you really have to start out in a small market for that and Im not willing to move to the midwest.

Im so sorry hun.

As far as becoming a teacher right now it's hard to get a job bc of budget BUT it wont always be and if its something you want to do dont let people saying its hard deter you. By the time your done with your masters things may be different and generally speaking education is a nice, secure field...Best of luck to you in your career decisions

Re: Got laid off

So sorry to hear this .... I am in the same boat -- I was laid off on Wed. I worked at a video prod. co. but it was owned by large online retailer who is laying off a bunch of people. I went to school for journalism too. I am looking for a copy editing position mainly, but would take PR or internal communications as I have done that before.

I am taking a few days to take stock basically - working on my resume, thinking about what I want to do, etc ...next week I'll start applying, but right now I am just thinking things through.

Did you get a severance package??

Aw, I'm so sorry to hear this. I remember you saying how miserable your boss had been. I hope something comes through right away for you. Thankfully it wasn't before your wedding. Maybe you'll find something in a nicer work environment.
