half sister vs step sister...?
random question that my friends and i 'argue' about ...my dad got remarried and adopted a child .... is that kid my step-sister or my half-sister?
i think half-sister because she's my dad's daughter (but not my mom's) and even though she's adopted, she still has that same title.
Most of my friends think she's my step-sister because there's no blood relation there since she's adopted.
What do you guys think?
ps: can you tell i'm bored at work

Re: half sister vs step sister...?
I would say since your dad adopted her, it's as if she's his natural daughter, so she's your half-sister. It's a designation that doesn't make a lot of sense because usually when you're saying half sister, you're thinking because she's hald blood related. BUT a step sibling would be someone with none of the same parents. She has the same dad. Half sister 100%.
I mean, I was adopted, my sister was not, is she my step sister since we're not blood related? LOL

Re: half sister vs step sister...?
I thought half sister/brother is blood related. Otherwise its step.I have 2 half siblings. Same mom.

half sister. My dad remarried and adopted a baby awhile ago, too. I don't understand why people don't get it, it's not that hard

Yeah, but she's adopted, so she's not 'blood related' regardless
But this child is exactly the same as if her dad and stepmom had had a baby 'the old fashioned way'...Had they done that, it would be a half sibling, which is what this child is.
A step sibling is a step parent's child from a prior marriage.

Re: half sister vs step sister...?
My younger sister (and brother) was adopted by my Dad and Stepmom....While in the technacalities of it, I guess I would say 'Half' vs Step... We don't do halves/steps in my family. We all consider each other full siblings.

Technically speaking, it's step-sister.I used to work at St. John's cemetery in Queens so we had to do a lot of work with geneaology.
ETA: Though I get why you could say half sister. But when I think half sibling, I think blood relation.

Re: half sister vs step sister...?
The new sister is your dads DAUGHTER - not step daughter. So it would be your half sibling.
If my brother were adopted, would he be my step brother because we are not blood related? No - so I think the same holds in this situation.

Re: half sister vs step sister...?
I would think half sister. She is adopted and she is legaly your dads daughter- just because she isnt blood shouldnt mean anything.

WHY would this be step sister?
I'm adopted, so this is close to my heart

Re: half sister vs step sister...?
Definitely a half sister. If she shares a parent with you, she is your half sister. As for a step sister, a step sister or brother is the child of your stepmother or father NOT from your own parent.

I dont think step is something offensive. Obv the love is there no matter what. I just thought half was for literally blood related only. Nothing offensive about that right?

Step would be for someone who is not the dad's daughter. The adopted sibling IS the dad's daughter

I hear you 100% .. I was just saying that I think Jill and I believe half was technically for blood relations only. But again, who cares. Its about the love not the label.
