Ohhhh this is tough...On the one hand I think ehh people are stupid and just leave it alone, hang out with the smack talker only when necessary. But THEN i realize that it's wrong and not nice and people shouldn't get away with it. So I think I would say something...I would either do it privately or do it in a joking manner in front of everyone so that the person gets the point and might even be embarassed..ya know?

I blow up their spot... but I have an exceptionally big mouth and I hate fakeness more than anything. I'd feel like a hypocrite if I sat there and played nice and never spoke up for myself.
BUT, it did cause a lot of issues. But I stand by my decision to say something. If I didn't, she'd still be talking smack behind my back and making me feel like an idiot. She still hangs out and I just don't associate with her. I don't speak to her and she knows better than to speak to me.

It depends on what was said. If it's just like 'oh she really gets on my nerves' type of thing or something really stupid, venting or whatever, I wouldn't say anything bc I think we've all done that at one time or another. If it's like bashing you behind your back, I would probably confront them on it. But in a nice way.

I'd probably say something, call them out on their bullshyt, and then write them off for awhile. Or forever, depending on what was said. Unless they apologize, then I'd just write them off for awhile.
But no passive/aggressive FB status updates. Those are not cute.

ITA! And Gina, you don't have to call her out in public - you can just call or email her or sit down and discuss it face to face if you're comfortable enough. But you have to let her know that whatever she did is not cool and you have no intention of tolerating it - and then DON'T.

Well in college my best friend growing up went to BC and my bf at the time was there and she bad- mouthed me to him. I stopped bothering with her, calling her, talking to her and when she asked why I told her. She was clearly embarrassed about being caught. But she wasn't in my group of friends... thats a lot harder. I would just try not to bother with her anymore.

this just happened to me... I killed them with kindness and know that the karma train will soon get them b/c 9 out of 10 times they talk about someone else this way and they will get busted.

i don't like confrontation either, but if i had to choose between people not respecting me and confrontation...i'd confront them about what they said! you don't have to be rude about it, just say what you heard straight up and how you feel about it. if they are b*tchy about it, they really aren't your friends in the first place.

A couple of years ago, I would have just continued to be civil. However, as I get older, I realize that the reason people do that is because they've never been held accountable for their actions.
So, I would definitely say something. I would do it in private - face to face. Email makes it too easy for things to be misconstrued.
Oh and I HATE confrontation and make myself sick whenever I have to confront someone but it's best if it's done like a brazilian wax - one quick pull!

Ok there is a difference between not liking confrontation & being mature & not making a huge scene.
When i was younger i def would have went right up to your face & confronted you about it. Today as i get older. I realize its not worth it. I really dont care what people think of me. I know im a good person & care about the ones i love to no end. Yes its very disappointing to find out that people you consider your friend is really a fake phooney biotch but if i were you id prob just cut that person out & if you saw them id just try to ignore them & let them figure out why you dont buddy up on her anymore. lol IMO its their loss of great person in their life.

I would completely blow up their spot. There's no way I could sit there with these people knowing that they've said nasty thing about me. I don't like confrontation either, but I'm not gonna sit there smiling at their faces while I know this.
