my boss complimented me today saying i always dress well but seemed surprised by it which I understand because we work in a VERY corporate environment and everyone is older so they dress the part but when iw as tmeping I noticed that even at some law offices, people would take dress down Fridays to heart and come in in flip flops and nice tee shirt type blouses.
When I was student teaching (and when i go back) I will dress accordingly-stil put together but more casual than pearls and high heels because you're on your feet all day and chasing after little guys. My second graders LOVED hugging me...with dirty hands lol. So my clothes got well loved after awhile. But I'd never wear jeans unless I was working in the art department because I don't feel ejans really give an 'authority' vibe off. JMO for me personally.
Do you ladies think that 'dressing the part' in a work environment helps or hurts? My company released an article on this so i was just curious. I do take into account that people working in corporate NYC might have a diff dress code than a more casual office somewhere else.
I personally prefer working in an environment that doesn't allow polo shirts and nice tees or flip flops(talking about corporate not school) because I think it forces people to take care in grooming and just presents mroe nicely.

Re: How do you dress for work?
I'm a part time teacher/administrator in a preschool. Dressing for both roles is a little tricky.
I do wear jeans, because I can be called into the classroom at any moment, but they are dark wash and tailored. I pair them up with a nice sweater or blouse and a blazer. I once had to chase a three year old down the street, (he was running away from his grandpa who was trying to drop him off)so I tend to wear comfortable flats or low heels.
An interesting scarf or necklace will dress the whole thing up in case I have a meeting.

LOL EXACTLY! I wore jeans to my se cond grade student teaching but they were trouser style and I always wore a tailored blouse and courdoroy jacket and leather flats. not 'dressy' but it fits the environenment.
There was actually ana rticle on MSN? a few months ago about interviewing for dif jobs and how suits aren't end all be all.
For a fashion industry job you want to stand out a little-maybe chunky jelwery or soemthign put together but eccelectic that gives a sense of personal style.
For teachers they suggested interviweing in slacks and a sweater set or a skirt and nice blouse because it shows flexibility-that you can look put together for parents and staff but still run after those little guys. I thought it was interesting.

I work in a very very causal office. Everyone wears jeans. Let me add at least mine are clean. Yeah we have some really winners here.

Re: How do you dress for work?
I have to wear a suit to work every day, except on fridays - which is business casual (nice pants, skirts, dress shirts).
as an aside, I do agree that you should dress for the job or position you want, not the job you have...

I wear business dressy to business casual. Suits, skirts, dress pants, blouses sweaters. Always shoes never flip flops and never jeans. In the summer everyone in the office tends to be a bit more casual I wear printed skirts or capris with sandals but still look dressy and professional.

Re: How do you dress for work?
When I worked in the city I definetly dressed the part. Now that I work from home I can pretty much wear anything that I want wear and that is usually sweats or my pj's. I do dress up if we are going to visit a client.

Re: How do you dress for work?
I'm all about dressing for the part. I look like I am 12, so I find I have a harder time getting people to take me seriously since they all see me as their 12 year old daughters. My job is a pretty conservative business casual, definitely no jeans, flip flops, sneakers, and no polo shirts except Fridays in the summer. We don't really have a dress down Friday, the firm policy is that business casual is already a dress-down policy. I am glad I don't have to wear a suit every day, though I wear them frequently. I do wish I could buy more fun work clothes though, this conservative dressing does get boring after awhile!

Re: How do you dress for work?
At my office..its business causal....however for the front desk..it is suppose to be 'one step above business causal'..which I did for awhile..however now that I'm 5 months pregnant...and big as a house..LOL...I can get away with the shirts and pants I've been wearing lately....Comfort first...
We also have dress down fridays which I love....

Re: How do you dress for work?
Business casual here and jeans on friday. But some of the things I see around where I work should not be worn by those individuals.

Re: How do you dress for work?
I have to dress business-business casual since I am usually in family court all day. So, days that I don't have a trial-nice slacks and a nice sweater, a dress, cardigan and skirt with ballet flats (since we are running all day)
Trial-suit. No negotiation!
For home visits with clients, I wear nice jeans and a dressy top with ballet flats.

Re: How do you dress for work?
I work in television which I think is a whole different animal. We can wear jeans everyday so jeans are pretty much my uniform I throw in a skirt or nice pants every once in a while but I like my jeans.

Re: How do you dress for work?
When I worked as a nurse I wore scrubs- i loved that cause it was like being in pajamas all day.
Now that I work for myself, I could wear what I want. I like to dress up a bit which is fun since for so many years I never did.

Re: How do you dress for work?
I have noticed that from school to school, dress code varies immensely! I have always dressed up for work primarily because I love getting dressed up and also because I feel like I need to separate myself from the students. If I am wearing jeans, a tee shirt, and flip flops, I will look like one of them. It is bad enough when I wear a pencil shirt and button down one student thought I was a new student Needless to say a lot of teachers in my school 'under' dress. They look so unprofessional. Typically, I 'over' dress. High heels, pencil skirts, dresses, nice slacks, etc. The only exception is Friday when I usually wear 'jants' as one of my co-workers refers to them. Jeans that pass as dress pants.

Re: How do you dress for work?
We have no dress code at all so sometimes I dress up a little when I feel like it (skirts when it gets warmer, nice black pants, etc.) but usually I dress very casually (jeans, sweats, etc.)
