How much is your typical grocery bill?

Original post by MrsD71208

I am wondering if we are average spenders while food shopping....I know that when we have to buy meat, it is more.....I guess that even when we buy meat or seafood it really is only $20-$40 dollars more anyway.....so try to estimate it as a regular shopping for your house bill. TIA!

Re: How much is your typical grocery bill?

I go grocery shopping every saturday and spend around $200. This week I spent $174 to be exact. Then mid week I always end up picking up a few things here and there. Grocery shopping is VERY expensive. It's nuts

I go shopping once a week and usually spend $75-100

ETA: We rarely go out to eat.

Do you buy alot of meat or what type of things normally. Also do you cook every night? I cook almost every single night plus when dh gets home from work make him lunch since lately he doesnt even have time to eat at work. Then on weekends i make breakfast, plus dinner of course

We cook maybe 3 to 4 x's a week. DH buy a huge ball of beef ($50) and has him mom cut it. I'm spanish, so a large rice bag and can beans...lol. He goes to western beef and buy 3 large carton of eggs.

I just asked him how much he spends and he says $120...lol. He goes to Western Beef and buys the sales. He won't buy aunt jemima syrup, he'll buy the cheaper kind, he's really good on saving. I am able to squeeze some cupcakes, and other goodies too.

I mean pancake powder lasts a long time, so does rice, seasoning, we end up using lots of eggs & milk. Go to Western Beef, you might spend less.

We buy the stuff that doesn't go bad, frozen or toiletries so we only go to BJs about twice a month.
Then I do the gracery store shopping as needed. So it changes each time I go depending on what we are cooking.
But I'm a big fan of produce and we don't eat out much. I'd rather cook, have some wine and relax at home lol.
I'd have to really start keeping track of my grocery spending to tell exactly what we spend.

I usually go about every two weeks and spend around 50-75. But I like to buy my meat from the butcher so add on about 25-30 every two weeks for meat.

If we are buying this house :fingers crossed: we'll be eating TUNAFISH and PB & J for weeks!!!

Dh goes nuts at the supermarket lol. When we go grocery shopping its around $200 or more, even when we went this past saturday grocery shopping we were saying our goal was to stay under $200 and don't think it happened, i think maybe we just came in right under that and thats bc the cashier put in her discount for us or i should say DH she really annoyed me and instead of ringing us up at first she just stood there smiling at DH until she realized what she was doing but even then she didnt stop, at least we got a discount

The sad part is that it seems like we're spending that much every week or maybe a little over a week. Problem is the meat we buy, plus dh always wants to get shrimp, then he always buys pork and sausages to make sauce once a week. Plus always getting steaks. The other problem I think is we buy too many beverages, i blame this on Dh too for example he always buys LOTS of vitamin waters and at the same time buy a bunch of snapple's, we also get the packs of redbull, then he wants fanta and other bottles of soda, plus he has to have juice and always gets two kinds, all that really adds up. Half the refrigerator is filled with beverages

i never used to get the supermarket discount cards or any of those type of things and last week I finally said maybe we should get it. Next time I gonna convince dh we should stay under $200

It's funny you say that about your DH and his need for multiple options. DH tells me that whenever I go to get 'a few things', it turns into a trunk filled with bags. When he comes with me, which is most of the time, we can never just get one type of cheese, or one type of nacho or even one type of rice....he needs like five types of each lol The meats for the sauce on Sunday do add up too....the best thing to do is get the big family packs when they are on sale and freeze the rest for like three-four more sauces. DH is finally realizing that lol

I do the same thing. I cook at least 6 nights a week, sometimes even 7. We have a nice breakfast on Saturdays and Sundays and I always make lunch for us........so we are buying food for breakfast, lunch and dinner. I couldn't imagine eating out more than once a week....sometimes we don't even do that.

maybe I don't know how to explain myself bc I don't do the shopping. You know how you buy meat and it's already cut into steak. Well he buys meat that is a ball (don't know what part of the cow) and his mom cleans and cuts it into steak. Does that help...lol

Really? Do you dislike cooking? See, I love to cook and take out the meat I plan to use the next night after dinner so that by the time we go to bed I can put it in the fridge, mostly defrosted. I always plan tomorrow's dinner the night before, usually at dinner lol

no I cook everyday usually. Some days he has softball and I'll cook when he gets home late but sometimes he'll just pick himself up food like mcdonalds or wendys on the way home. Yesterday was his last softball game of the season so that will stop. I am weird and dont like left overs usually so when I cook i usually make enough for that night and dont have leftovers, sometimes though and dh will eat it. On weekends its easier bc Dh will cook on sunday, thats his day to make sauce lol. I like cooking so I don't mind and some meals he wants don't take long at all, such as steak that is very quick to make.

There isn't one close to me, at least not that I know of. I know there is one in astoria but i moved from there. I did tell DH we have to start going to costco, at least for the beverages which will save alot. He buys the vitamin waters but buying it at a supermarket gets pricey bc they sell them loose, at costco we can get the big packages of it, and even the snapple he buys. Plus things like dishwasher detergent which i have to buy often, paper towels and that sort of stuff.

lol yeah it really adds up. If i go alone its a different story but I rarely go alone when we do the big food shopping, i only go alone when I have to run to the supermarket and just pick up a few things. Dh can't get just one type of juice he needs orange juice and ruby red, he cant have just one or two other beverages he has to get alot. Even with shrimp, he always wants to get 2 packages instead of 1, i'll get 1 if i put shrimp in pasta but otherwise if shrimp is the main part of the dish he wants more than half of those packages which arent that big and dont blame him bc with seafood youre still hungry after an hour if you eat just a little bit of it. Then he gets LOTS of lean pockets and hot pockets, sometimes when he gets home he just wants to eat something ASAP or wants them around for snacks so he buys like 8 of those things lol. The eggs unfortunately we do get the organic ones so they are more pricey but we do like the organic eggs ALOT better, has alot more flavor and you dont even have to season it and it tastes good.

The problem is that sometimes i will make meals with LOTS of ingredients that need to be brought. And like I said before definitely the meat and seafood adds up. I have problems with freezing food, but I should get over my issues and do it. Where we like getting the meat they dont usually have the real big family packs though so thats also why it will cost more.
