I am wondering if we are average spenders while food shopping....I know that when we have to buy meat, it is more.....I guess that even when we buy meat or seafood it really is only $20-$40 dollars more anyway.....so try to estimate it as a regular shopping for your house bill. TIA!

Re: How much is your typical grocery bill?
I put 50-100 a week, but probably average $65-75 a week. I dont think we have ever had a bill over $150 and if we did it was due to a party we were having.
We typically cook 4 nights a week, eat out 2 nights a week and 'fen for ourselves' 1 night week (by that I mean, soup, tuna, salad, something small). When we cook, we have meat and a veggie.
Most of our money is spent on meats, cold cuts, etc. However we dont always buy cold cuts but they definitely add up! Plus I bring a lot of food to work....veggies, fruit, granola bars, yogurt etc and that can add up sometimes esp when they arent on sale!
We barely buy soda or anything else...only if its on sale. Oh and we get bottled water...but only on sale for like $2.99 a case. We dont keep chips or any junk in the house cause otherwise I will eat it!

that was always my motto, don't keep junk food in the house and you won't eat it. Well dh feels differently he has to buy bags of onion rings, his rice puddings, jalapeno poppers and that sort of stuff. I used to NEVER buy any of those things and it was great bc if it wasn't in the house I was pigging out on stuff, i only used to buy what i needed. Now its like theres too many things, I am good for the most part but sometimes I give in lol. I try to tell DH while we're at the supermarket that its better not to have junk food in the house and he just gives me the you're crazy look.

DH and I eat very well. Alot of fresh produce and good lean meats and I keep our food bill under 60 bucks a week and that includes lunches for dh 3 days out of the week.
We eat home 5 nights out of the week and we usually dont cook on the weekends.
We have recently changed our eating habits and we are only eating out once a week.
I would rather spend money on other things besides food, so I clip and print out coupons and I usually get 100% worth of food everyweek but for almost half the price!!!
Which sites do you use to print coupons? We tend to buy the same items every week so coupons would definately help us.

I use coolsavings.com, couponmom.com, and buy sunday's newsday every week. I have become a coupon fiend and saved a TON of money.
Couponmom has an excellent system that will help you. Basically, you look through your weekly circulars and make a list of all the stuff you want from the supermarkets. You should try to buy everything on sale, obviously. Then, buy sundays newsday and take out the coupon circulars(red plum, smart source, etc.) and write the date on the front and keep them until you need them. Then go to couponmom.com's 'coupon database'. There, she has a list of ALL coupons from past and present sunday papers with the dates. Do a search and find the coupons you need, then cut it out of your circular.
If you use coupons when food is on sale, especially if the store DOUBLES the coupon, you will save an unbelievable amount of money.
The system seemed a bit confusing at first, but once you get the hang of it, it doesn't take that much time. Couponmom explains it a little better on her website.

DH takes care of the shopping, I just go along for the ride....lol but if I am not mistaken I think he does not go over $200 a mnth.
wow 200 a month, that is real good. Where do you guys go grocery shopping, not just you but others lol. Thats $50 a week so really not bad at all.
Do you buy alot of meat or what type of things normally. Also do you cook every night? I cook almost every single night plus when dh gets home from work make him lunch since lately he doesnt even have time to eat at work. Then on weekends i make breakfast, plus dinner of course
I do the same thing. I cook at least 6 nights a week, sometimes even 7. We have a nice breakfast on Saturdays and Sundays and I always make lunch for us........so we are buying food for breakfast, lunch and dinner. I couldn't imagine eating out more than once a week....sometimes we don't even do that.
You would be the perfect wife for my DH. I forget I have to cook He cooked last night and mumbled something about me not cooking so I was like fine, I'll cook tonight and tomorrow.
Really? Do you dislike cooking? See, I love to cook and take out the meat I plan to use the next night after dinner so that by the time we go to bed I can put it in the fridge, mostly defrosted. I always plan tomorrow's dinner the night before, usually at dinner lol
I just forget about dinner...lol I am used to eating out or buying take out and I guess cooking is not my favorite thing.

Dh goes nuts at the supermarket lol. When we go grocery shopping its around $200 or more, even when we went this past saturday grocery shopping we were saying our goal was to stay under $200 and don't think it happened, i think maybe we just came in right under that and thats bc the cashier put in her discount for us or i should say DH she really annoyed me and instead of ringing us up at first she just stood there smiling at DH until she realized what she was doing but even then she didnt stop, at least we got a discount
The sad part is that it seems like we're spending that much every week or maybe a little over a week. Problem is the meat we buy, plus dh always wants to get shrimp, then he always buys pork and sausages to make sauce once a week. Plus always getting steaks. The other problem I think is we buy too many beverages, i blame this on Dh too for example he always buys LOTS of vitamin waters and at the same time buy a bunch of snapple's, we also get the packs of redbull, then he wants fanta and other bottles of soda, plus he has to have juice and always gets two kinds, all that really adds up. Half the refrigerator is filled with beverages
i never used to get the supermarket discount cards or any of those type of things and last week I finally said maybe we should get it. Next time I gonna convince dh we should stay under $200
It's funny you say that about your DH and his need for multiple options. DH tells me that whenever I go to get 'a few things', it turns into a trunk filled with bags. When he comes with me, which is most of the time, we can never just get one type of cheese, or one type of nacho or even one type of rice....he needs like five types of each lol The meats for the sauce on Sunday do add up too....the best thing to do is get the big family packs when they are on sale and freeze the rest for like three-four more sauces. DH is finally realizing that lol
I just buy those powdered drink mixes and make my drinks. But if you really like the vitamin waters try buying them at a discount store like walmart. Shop around. Walmart, target, BJs, great prices for the exact same stuff!

I don't usually buy a lot of the stuff they have coupons for. Cleaners and paper towels though I use. I should just google coupons for the items I buy huh?

You can try that. What type of items do you buy that don't have coupons? Are you including newsday too?

well dh buys the vitamins waters and snapple so its not for me. And yeah he is obsessed with the xxx vitamin water so he wont substitute. But I told him that we're gonna start going to costco to get those type of things and a few other stuff. Its way too pricey to buy individual bottles at a supermarket. Alot of times they do have sales on them but still comes out to alot.
