When I got home, I wasn't sure whether or not my husband was in our spot in the garage or not (he had the keys but he was off yesterday so he would be able to park on the street)..
I circled around the neighborhood for 1/2 hour looking for a spot. My phone died so I couldn't call him to ask if he could bring me the keys to the garage...
Finally I decided to double park, run upstairs and get the key. Turns out he left the spot in the garage open, and left me a VM to tell me. Of course I didn't get it b/c my phone was dead.
So I go running back downstairs and get in my car. A cop drives past me and stops in front of me. He jumps out of his car and holds his hand out for me to stop.
HE GAVE ME A 115 DOLLAR TICKET FOR DOUBLE PARKING!!!!
I understand, it's illegal.. I know this. People in our neighborhood do it all the time b/c the parking is horrendous. When I pick my son up from the babysitter I usually double park, run up & grab him. People are ALWAYS double parking and it's never a problem... I guess maybe b/ c it was raining, they were being strict.
I'm just so mad b/c I was just about to LEAVE when he pulled up. I pleaded with him, explained that I just ran to get my keys and couldn't find a spot but he wasn't having it...Understood. It was raining outside etc etc.
I know he's just doing his job, and theres nothing I can do to fight it, but I'm so p*ssed b/c the ticket is for 115 dollars. Had it been a normal 45 dollar parking ticket, it would be easier to swallow.
my HAIR cost less... and money is so tight right now I couldn't help but cry.
yes. I cry over parking tickets. All I keep thinking is I could have gotten another bday present for aidan with 115... I could have put that money towards his communion party.

Re: I am so upset...
Caroline, I am going to tell you the same thing that I tell everyone else who asks about parking tickets... GO FIGHT IT IN PERSON! Even if you didn't win one before for Double Parking or not. There may be something wrong with the summons as far as how it was filled out. That would get it thrown out automatically. If the writing is all correct, plead your case. Tell the judge what you wish- what you think may be a feasible reason for double parking. Personally, I would say that you were in the car with the engine running, which would constitute 'Standing' not 'Double Parking.' I would explain to the judge that you were about to park in your garage and you were waiting for the officer to pass so you could back up.
It does succk that the ticket is $115. All Double Parking, Bus Stop, Crosswalk, Pedestrian Ramp summonses are all very high in fines because they are considered 'hazardous summonses.' The local precinct is pressured to write more of them because they interfere with traffic flow [both vehicular and pedestrian] and are accident indicators. Regardless... the officer who wrote the summons... I bet you $300, was a summons officer, which means that his only job is to write summons for the precinct. So, anytime he sees a violation, you bet your asss he's writing it.
Make sure you don't wait... fight the summons in person! All the info is on the back, as to where and when to go.
Btw- Do not just ignore it. After 30 days of non payment the fine goes up. It increases again at 60 and at 90 days overdue. Since the summons was $115 to start with, after extra fines... you will find your car towed by the NYC Marshall. Then you will have to pay the summons, the tow fee and the storage fee... total of about $400. If you need any help/advice, FM me.
One last thing... cops have quotas that they must reach every month of how many summonses are expected of them. To that officer, your car was just another number; one that will keep his asss out of trouble. Just some food for thought...

Re: I am so upset...
what an a-hole i totally know how u feel with all the transportation chaos around here..i have like 3tickets sitting in our bill box that i have yet to pay...
it's just annoying that the cop saw u running out to get in the car..u think he would've understood...but then again they never do. gotta make their quota Just last week i was up by austin st. & had to run into the bank....there was an open spot (muni-meter parking) so i jumped in. As i got out of the car there was a cop RIGHT NEXT TO THE METER MACHINE writing someone a ticket....she completely made eye contact with me..watched me put change it, and put the slip in my car. i go in the bank for 5minutes, come out & theres a ticket on my car. Little did i realize there was no parking after 4pm...but because there was a whole SLEW of cars, i just didn't read the sign. yes, COMPLETELY my own stupidity...but u think the cop could've said something. Instead she watched & anticipated the whole thing. some people are just jerks & looks for things like that to give them a thrill
ugh - sorry for ur ticket just send them a little at a time so u dont have to pay the huge chunk all at once....

they DO come after u in queens....they actually threatened to re-posses my car a little while back. what u CAN do is send them a little at a time if u dont intend to fight it...and just make sure the entire thing is paid up by the due date...ugh. parking tickets...what a headache

I've done this before. I got one ticket for double parking on another (busier) street...i went in to fight it... pleaded my case that my grandmother was watching my son and it was raining, so I ran up to get him... The judge just said 'sorry, double parking is illegal' and I had to pay the full amount. I might go to jamaica just to take the plea bargain though.
I could never ignore a parking ticket... I dont have it in me..

I have the money... It's just that money is so TIGHT these days... it hurts to have to pay 115.00 towards something like THIS, instead of something for aidan etc etc..

Fight it. fight it fight it fight it. Gabi's 100% right; i'm sorry you got a mean judge last time, but I've had SOOOOOO many tix reduced/dismissed (back when i had a car). Just be SUPER NICE when you get to the room, the people in front of me have always been pissy, which can definitely work to your advantage!!! Just state your case, and you never know, even a reduced fee is better than $115!!!!

it works differently in queens. you are in a room with the judge alone. You sit down in front of his desk and that's it.

Went and got my hair done after work...

I fight every single parking ticket because they will lower it before anything. My 115 dollar tix usually get lowered to 90. Its not much but at least youll save something. Always always fight parking tix. Just plead not guilty, you dont even have to write anything. They send you a new bill to see if you will just pay a lower amount and not go through with a mail hearing.
And I know its illegal but thats why I cant stand parking ticket agents. If you were already in your car they should have let you go. I would have cursed the guy out (thats what I usually do)

And if Im correct, you dont go to court for a parking ticket. Those are traffic tix. Ive never gone to court when I fought a traffic ticket. I usually write a statement and have any witnesses right a statement and send it in with the ticket. Ive won that way.
Oops just read that you did go to court once for double parking. I didnt think you had to go to court for parking tix.

Parking ticket agents are scum... but this was a cop.
So, if I just mail it back and indicate not guilty, WILL THEY offer me the plea bargain through the mail?
If so, that's what I will do.

Yes! Just check the not guilty and I guarantee they will lower it to 90 bucks. I know its only a 25 dollar saving but its a little something. I know how painful parking tickets are. I think I tear every time I get one!!! Ive been pretty good lately though (knocking on wood)

Re: I am so upset...
Do you have a scanner? If so, scan the ticket and send it to my email address and I will look at it to see if it was filled out properly. Fyi- when I used to live in Astoria, I used to get soooooooooo many parking tickets. I would park where the teachers parked by an elementary school and the traffic agents would write me tickets. I would ALWAYS fight them in Jamaica and I would always either win or get a reduction. I would not tell them I am on the NYPD b/c then they would have said I should have known better and not let me off at all!
So, I reiterate... GO FIGHT THEM IN PERSON. GO TO THE JAMAICA PVB. I will FM you my email address.

That really stinks .... I hope that you find a way to fight it, even if you just get the amount of the ticket lowered its still probably worth it.
