I feel like Im suffocating

I feel like Im suffocating

b/c I just found out my unemployment ran out last week not this week & I didnt get the recent approved extension to april 4th

I went through all the jobs Ive applied for since I knew I was losing my job back in may of last year & some of the emails I lost b/c of my comp crash in nov so I know there's AT LEAST another 50 unaccounted for, but I have applied for....387 positions since May 4th, 2009 & only gotten 1 interview from all of that. I have been having shallow breathing all day & almost feeling like Im having a panic attack. I just cannot believe that I have applied to that many jobs (& that is just the TEACHING jobs) - I have probably applied to about 25-30 clerical jobs too(w/no response) - with only ONE response to come for teaching & interview & STILL NO JOB.

I am trying not to freak out in front of DH but unfortunately I am no good at poker face - & have been avoiding him all day until he has to go to work tonight so I can finally break down & cry.

Now I want to add that I did drive up to unemployment today & they told me to call Albany on Thurs - but I called anyway on my way home today & I did get approved for another 20 weeks (thankfully), but I really feel like a freak that I have applied for SO many jobs & NO one wants to even INTERVIEW me, much less HIRE me...I really feel like something is wrong with me...

I know that by being upset that it doesnt help & I am only drawing more negative energy to me....but wow I am feeling like I am suffocating/drowning & I just cant catch my breath & I am really scared.

Sorry to be such a downer guys....but I dont want to put this all on DH - he has so much already on his plate. Thanks for listening if you've made it this far.

I wish I had some great words of wisdom for you. I know it doesn't help, but it really isn't you, it's the stinky economy.

Hang in there Laurie...take one day at a time and keep trying...flood all of these schools with your resume...have you thought about any daycare options until teaching positions come about???

I have to agree Laurie. I know that's not really a comfort though. Hang in there ...

Laurie, I really do understand how you are feeling. Maybe you can find something else to do. I know that is easier said then done. What about a store or waitressing. I am right there with you and its so frustrating. With so many schools laying off its not sounding like its going to get easier either. I know at least 4 districts on LI that are doing massive lay-offs and one in NJ, one in CT and one upstate. I know that makes you feel worse not better but I am finding that facing that reality is helping me move on to a new plan rather then hang on to the idea of teaching.

I wish you were down here, we could buy a little business together. Actually have a bit of a plan (if it works out) but would want a partner.

I am sending hugs and love your way.

Re: I feel like Im suffocating

I have actually tried branching beyond teaching. I have applied in retail & various clerical (receptionist/secretary/admin asst) positions, but no one wants to even interview me. since I havent had any exp in these fields in like forever & Im not fresh out of HS where I am ignorant to the worlds ways - most places do not want to hire me. The see I have 8 straight years of teaching experience & that says something to them I guess. It's funny(not really), but ironic - b/c there is an episode of the Honeymooners that I feel is like the same way - Ralph gets laid off from the bus company - no one will hire him b/c they see he's been working for the company for 15 years & once the layoff is over they know he will be going back to the bus comany so no one wants to hire him....thats how I feel...everyone knows that I am in the same boat as a lot of teachers, and that once the job market improves that I will be looking to go back into teaching, nonetheless I still need to pay bills. At this point we can barely afford to put anything into savings, and are using our wedding $$ for any big expenses that come up. That really $ucks b/c I was really hoping to use that $$ for when we have a child,...but now I am wondering - are we even going to be able to afford to have a child (this too makes me even more upset b/c I think this would kill me - it would be one thing if it was not in God's plan to not be able to conceive, but to not have a child purposely b/c we cant afford one,....

I called 2 temp agencies today too...everything I have ANY kind of qualifications for is slow. of course they tell me the usual 'fax/email your resume...blah blah blah

Re: I feel like Im suffocating

I also dropped off an application for a leave replacement today for a special ed position. Ive already been approved to sub in the district, although Ive never been called

I didnt get good vibes from the people when I dropped it off but maybe some prayers might help that I at least get called for the interview...

I'm so sorry!!

I don't know if you've already considered this, but when my aunt couldn't find a teaching job she switched careers and went into corporate training. Have you looked at jobs doing that? Or anything having to do with internship programs (like being a coordinator or something)? Or any other kind of after school program that might need someone with a teaching background?

I used to work in an internship program and I got the job because I had a lot of teaching experience. And when I was interviewing for jobs after that one, any job (until my current one) that I got interviews at were all after school programs (stuff to keep kids off the street).

I know that's not the same thing as being a teacher in a classroom, but it's another avenue to look at to float you until the economy gets better and you have better lunch with actual teaching positions. Either way, keep the faith alive! You will find something eventually, just don't give up!

i'm sorry you're feeling so bad. i can't offer any advice or anything only to say that i know how you feel!!! and that i hope that you can find something soon. it's not you, it's the awful economy. and do what you need to do to keep your head above water and your chin up too! venting and reaching out to people helps, doing anything and everything to help yourself feel better! it will get better!! but i send you lots of hugs in the meantime!!
