I grew up in New Hyde park too, but went to Great Neck South. They are one of the top rated public schools..
Plainview/Bethpage school districts are good too

Only going off what SDs we looked in (so it's what was affordable for us)...
Nassau - Massapequa, Bethpage, Seaford, Wantagh - we were going to look in Plainedge SD but we heard from a teacher there that the budget stinks and there are always probs
Suffolk - West Islip, Half Hollow Hills (Deer Park zip code, HHH schools)
We're in Massapequa now... Good luck with your house hunting!!!

if you want to stay in Suffolk - I def recommend W Islip and Deer Park w/ HHH schools.
I'm really familiar with the areas so if you do look there let me know and I'll tell you about them.
