I think...

I think...

I want to move to the boston area in like 2 years. How do i convince DH? LOL. He has never lived away from his family. But I feel like Boston area would be good. There is a lot of job opportunity and my company has an office there so there is the chance they could allow me to switch offices, or I could get a new job and for what I do and what I have seen, the salaries are pretty much the same. I just think it would be nice to live a bit closer to my family- and we wouldn't be that far from NY. And I feel like we could get a much nicer home for a lot less money, and I feel like that makes a big difference. And I love New England. But I dunno if DH would go for it. But we will be able to afford a home there years before here. And I wont have kids till we can afford a home or afford for me to not have to work anymore....

ETA: DH can basically do his work from anywhere so he wouldnt have to quit a job or anything. But I dont know if he would seriously leave LI. But I dont think I can live on LI and raise a family because of the costs...

Re: I think...

I moved to Boston two years ago to be with DH and I really like it. There's lots of fun things to do in the city and we go camping in Maine a couple of times over the summer. Also, I've got a bunch of college friends in the area, which is good for me. My folks live in the Port Jeff area so I can drive to CT, hop on the ferry in Bridgeport and go see them.

One caution, I don't think that Boston is all that much cheaper than New York. It is a buyers market now. However, if you want to live close to the city, in a decent house and in a good school district, you are going to pay top dollar. Some people work around this by renovating a fixer-upper or by taking on a longer commute. However, the metro area is still pricy.

Hope that helps!

Re: I think...

just talk openly with him about why you would love for the two of you to live there- present the pros and cons and discuss it with him, feel him out on the whole topic.

GL!

random PS- my DH loves Boston!!

DH and I live in a suburb outside of Boston - it's great!! you could tell DH the following to convince him:

Lower house prices than LI
Cheaper property taxes than LI
Cleaner 'city' than NYC
Faneuil Hall/Quincy Market...fun to hang out
close to camping/rafting/lots of golf

im sure ill think of more :)

Also you can go to the Cape which is really nice, ski in NH which is awesome!! Own a snowmobile cause in the winter you actually get snowed in...LOL Quincy Market is awesome to hang out at. Newbury Street is also. I could go on and on. Can you tell I miss it? Oh wait and a hop skip and jump from Maine!!!

Ya I have friends in the area too- and my parents are in the portland area so its only a little over an hour from Boston. Homes are still pricey cus it is new england, but you can get a 4 bedroom home with 2.5 baths and like half an acre of land for well under 500k- so yes it is pricey, but still a looooot less than here. Thats a major reason I want to leave here. My best friend got a 3 bedroom house in an excellent school district for 300k. In the regualr market it would have been about 375- thats still a lot less than here.... Im gonna talk to DH about it more I think. :)

Hehe we are going in a couple of weeks for my BF's shower. And then we are going to maine again in the fall- but we go to maine like 5-6 times a year. I grew up there. But we dont go into Boston much together. So I need to get him there more...

I love MA! Its one of the few states I would consider moving to if we ever had to leave LI. The other two states are CT and Maine. Would you consider maybe moving to CT? You'll be in the middle. It might be a better compromise for your DH. You can tell him LI is just a ferry ride away.

I went to college in Boston. I thought it was nice...very clean...smaller, but everything did close much earlier and it's not necessarily cheaper. Boston is also pretty expensive. Personally I would choose NY over Boston.

Id do connecticut, but the parts Id move to would still be like 4 hours from my family, because at that point Id want to stay near NY for my job.So its still very expensive. There is Hartford, but there isn't the job opportunity there that there is in NY and Boston as far as I know. I may be wrong...
