If you were preggers... or if you are this one is for you...

If you were preggers... or if you are this one is for you...

Do you think it's important to decorate the nursery and set up before the baby comes? I think it's nesting right? How important do you or don't you think this is?

I'm not preg and wasn't... but based on what I've seen with my sisters I think it's easier to have everything set up before (although a few of them didn't do it because they are superstitious) but not totally necessary - in the beginning the babies were always in their bedrooms in bassinettes anyway.

my sister is due at the end of the month and because it's her FOURTH kid and they lived in a small cape, they decided to add a dormer to the house. Great, except it's nowhere close to done and her house is a SHAMBLES the poor baby is going to come home to dust, the rest of the kids are sleeping in the basement, and my BIL estimates that the upstairs will be totally done in november, which is crazy to me. she's trying not to freak out though but definitely no nursery decorating for her!

I'm hoping we can set up a nursery because I think it will be easier and less stressful before the baby is born.

However, we are plannning to move in the next few months and the timing may not work out for us. My folks didn't have the nursery set up for me and I turned out ok.

I will make sure that I have a bassinet, changing table and carseat ready. My SIL has a bouncer and swing that I can borrow if needed.

Doing the nursery ahead of time is nice, but I don't think it is absolutely necessary.

as for what i would do - i am unsure...as we are trying and just seeing baby stuff right now - KILLS me inside...

to answer your question though...it's entirely a personal choice. My sister in law, for example is DEAD SET against having ANYTHING until the baby is born. They won't set up a crib, but they will clear out the space so that it's all set.

When i asked her about the practicality of it - she said that we live in a world where they can overnight things if they have to, etc.

I'm a little confused...what is a reasoning for not having it done???

right now we have no separate room for a nursery, just a great big space in our living room/dining room that will be babyland. if we have a house before we have a baby, then yes, we will definitely have a nursery set up for when the baby comes home. if we're still in our condo, we'll prepare as best we can for the arrival of the baby.

for my SIL?

There are a few reasons. One is her culture - in her religion it's very bad luck to do things before a baby is born (including showers, she will not be having one).

And the second reason is very private & upsetting. I think that answer alone may hint as to why.

this might not be jess's reason but for my sister she didn't want any gifts before the baby was born (like at christmas) just because her DH's family is very superstitious and sees it as a bad omen. I don't agree with it but it's personal like jess said.

PREGGO here... and my recent experience is teaching me that

a) the nesting instinct is VERY strong and VERY real...
But as much as I would've LIIIIIKED to have baby's nursery all done and 100% ready before he's here, its highly unlikely to pan out that way because: we had major renovations to do that took way longer than i predicted (like 5 weeks vs 2!) so that slowed stuff down.

b) working full time REALLY cuts into your decorating time -- you're just too tired in the 3rd tri to tackle that after a full day at work and the commute!!

c) I have it on really good authority that BABIES DONT CARE whether stuff is ready or not. They're just looking for the milk machine for the first 3 months.

Heck we don't even have our crib yet. Babby will be rooming with us for the first few months so we're not rushing to get that set up just yet!!!!

Hope that helps!!!!

well in the jewish religion they don't believe in doing anything or getting anything for the baby before its born. I think its bad luck or something.

We are setting up the babys room before he arrives. We just found out the sex on tuesday, and DH and I have already picked out paint color, and he is going to start painting next week on his 2 days off. I'm a big planner, so I'm hoping everything will be done wayyy before I'm due

the only thing you need to set up is the wipes, diapers & changing pad and a swing. I didn't use anything else for months. We didn't even get her crib until she was 3 months old. She didn't start sleeping in it until she was almost 6 months old

Of course you dont have to set everything up. But do you think it helps with the nesting to decorate at least, even if the baby doesn't stay in that room right away?

Hmmm I would say 'YES' from an emotional standpoint Beth.
This is our first babby so i have NO CONFIDENCE whatsoever that I'm doing anything right or will be able to handle this once he gets here.
Even tho we'll love him to bits, I really feel incompetent.
So painting/shopping/'setting up' etc helps me feel like I'm at least physically ready, but the mental and emotional stuff is still a work in progress!!!

I think it depends on what kind of person you are. I think 'nesting' can definitely help future parents prepare for the baby, but it can go overboard sometimes if you are stressed about it all being perfect right away.

That being said, my SIL was a few days past her due date. The night her DH finished painting the baby's room, she went into labor. Almost like the baby was waiting for them!

Nesting is very strong in most people. I have everything done before my older guy was born. With the little guy I knew what I needed to have out and what was not going to be used for a while . so the day before he was born i made sure everything was ready for him....diapers wipes onesies bouncy seat bassinette and swing.........

Re: If you were preggers... or if you are this one is for you...

I think this is a cultural thing. I know many people of Jewish Heritage think it's bad luck to set-up the nursery or have any baby items in their home before the baby is born. I think, though I am not positive, that one of the reasoning behind this is god forbid something happens to the baby the mom doesn't need to come home to a house filled wiht baby things that would be a painful reminder of the loss.

I myself am pregnant and am in my second trimester. I have just started into looking at nursery items etc but have not bought anything yet. We are planning on setting up a full nursery once I hit my third trimester. I want a special quiet place that is dedicated to the bay where I can be calm and bond with the baby. I am also planning on painting a mural or other touches in teh nursery and need time for this! I think I'm going to be so busy with breastfeeding, sleeping and caring for my new born that the last thing I would want to do is have to set-up a nursery!!

I am pregnant right now - - I am going to wait to buy furniture until after the bambino comes, because we aren't finding out what we're having and if it's a girl, I want 'girlie' furniture, and if it's a boy...you get the picture.

We will be painting the room a neutral color - like a sea-foam or something in the teal/sage/aquaish arena, I think. I say do what YOU want!!!!
