I'm not a newlywed, but...

I'm not a newlywed, but...

Just out of curiosity, what was the biggest adjustment to being married? My fiance and I have been together for a little over 4 years. We are getting married next summer. We don't live together now, and won't until after the wedding. What are some suggestions you may have about these adjustments? Especially if you didn't live together first. Thanks!!

We didnt live together before the wedding either and were together for 5 years before hand!
I think the biggest adjustment is meshing your routines! Each of us came from our homes where we were used to things being done a certain way. Now we are having to make our own routines. I will say my DH is obsessive compulsive so he is much more particular about certain things than I think most men are. He is one of those 'everythign has its place' type of people and I am much more laid back. So a big thing has been compromising to figure out a way to bring both our lives under one roof! (2 bathrooms has helped! )

Oh and cooking has been a big adjustment!!!

We lived together for a year and a half before we got married so we were used to eachother's habits and routines. But if you don't live together, I think that is the biggest adjustment! For us (more specifically, for me), it was the merging of money & bills. Although he makes more than me, I was the one who was strange about having him pay for things and handing over some of my bills to 'us'. I was so used to being independant and paying my own way and I had to get used to it being 'our money' which he constantly drills into my head. Plus, we each do our banking so differently that we had to learn how to compromise and do it together.

There are so many pluses and minuses to this.. We didn't live together until after the wedding and we were together for 6 years..
The biggest adjustment I would have to agree with the 'routine' thing... That would be number 1 in my book. Also, I am SO not a morning person and he is... So needless to say we don't speak much in the morning.
And yes, definitely the old way to do things and the new way... Of course the new way is my way.. LOL... If you have a FH that's very patient and understanding (which they all are) then you'll get along just fine... Just be prepared because there might be a few bumps in the road... And don't get discouraged if you tend to bicker (sp?) over stupid things... It's bound to happen..
and I WISH I had two bathrooms... Two words... Toothpaste slobber! LOL
Just remember to have fun with it.... and LAUGH A LOT!

Good Luck!
