I call them by their first names - they are not the 'mom and dad' type.

DH calls my mom by her first name too but he calls my dad 'Aba' - which is how you say Dad in Hebrew - that's what everyone, all our friends have always called my dad - like it's his name! SO, i guess DH does call me dad 'dad'

Usually on the phone I'll say, 'Hi It's ME' then we go from there. I haven't had an instance where I've had to call them MOM and DAD. Yes, it would be very hard. I have my own MOM and DAD.

I call my ILs mom and dad. Its a little more difficult than I thought it would be especially considering I just lost my own mom.
But I know thats how my mom felt it should be! she called my grandmother mom even though they never got along!

I was always brought up that it was a respect thing! And then after my brother got married my mom always felt like my SIL calling her by her first name was like saying 'I have my own mom I dont need another' (we obviously have other issues with SIL)

My own personal opinion is that it would be disrespectful to call them by their first names as they are more special than that in my life! I call many adults by their given names but I only call 2 people mom and 2 people dad and those 4 people deserve it because they raised me and my DH and they have welcomed both of us into their lifes openly!

But is because that is how I was raised!

Either way I dont feel a person should feel that they 'have ' to call their ILs anything other than something that both parties are comfortable with!
