Irish day is tomorrow!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Original post by KerriJohnS

Anyone going to the parade??? I'll be there!!!!!!!!!!!!

Who is wearing some green??? You ALL better be wearing some green!!!! EVERYONE is Irish on St Patrick's day!! We like to celebrate with all!!!
Don't wear any Orange though!!!!

I posted some Irish fun facts on my fb page!!!

Here are some fun facts on LIW for you!! (more on my fb page!!)
St Patrick was English (real name is thought to be Maewyn Succat) and sold into slavery as a teenager. He was a slave in Ireland for 6 years. Upon his return to Ireland he brought Christianity with him, using the shamrock to explain the holy trinity. He used the christian cross and combined it with a symbol of the god of the sun (or the sun cross) to blend Pagan Irish (or Druids in Ireland) to Christianity; now known as the Celtic Cross.

While the Irish have observed St Patrick's Day for thousands of years, 1762 was the year of the first St Patrick day parade in NYC!!!! GET YOUR GREEN ON!!!!! MARCH 17th!!!!!

Sorry... I get a little nutty for St Pat's day!!!!

that stinks!!
but it should be fun.. even if your wearing red.

I used to march every year.

Christine's Irish Soda Bread

1 stick margarine or butter softened
1 cup sugar
4 cups flour
1 tsp baking soda
2 tsps baking powder
1 tsp salt
2 eggs
1 1/4 cup buttermilk
1 TBsp caraway seeds
1 cup raisins

Preheat oven to 350 degrees and grease a 9' corningware dish.
Cream margarine and sugar together. Add eggs and then add remaining ingredients. Dough will be very heavy. Put dough into dish. Bake for 1 hour.

Here are my tips:
I use pyrex dish 8x8... the square pan.
I also add more raisins but, thats preference.
I do not add caraway seeds.
Also I use an additional 1 to 1 1/2 cups of flour. I do this because the dough is to wet and sticky. So I sprinkle the flour around as I go til its floured enough.
Also to make sure the dough isnt sticky nor wet use your hands at the end.

I'll be wearing green and I'm making cupcakes spiked with Baileys for tomorrow. I'm going to make sheppard's pie for dinner tomorrow since DH hates corned beef and cabbage. He says it smells like farts and it's for poor people. He's crazy!

My uncle is from Jersey I have to see if he has a site...his band is actually playing in Georgia this year. After Georgia they are going to play in Puerto Rico for some fire convention. Last year they played in Ireland for St. Paddys Day!

O WOW! that sounds like a lot of fun!!!
And st pat's day in Ireland!! how awesome is that?!?!? I've never had the chance to go to Ireland...but it's a long time dream of mine.. so I will get there one day!!

Yea but in Ireland its not as big of a holiday as in America. I know most 'straight off the boat Irish' who prefer to be here in NYC partying at the parade than be home in Ireland celebrating.

I havent been to Ireland either, but DH and I want to go one day with our children to show them where DH's grandfather came from. My relatives are so Americanized it would be too hard to find out where they were from

Hey Kerri how about you let me know some of those nice places your talking about for tomrrow

What's nice about the parade is there are actually some less popular spots where there are relatively no drunk people and space so you can go right up to the barriers and watch right from there. the drunk people are all in the bars for the most part. I avoid the bars now... I can't deal with that!!! It's too much for me.

send me your number and I'll text them to you as i see them if you'd like.
I'm really bad bad bad with directions and never know where I am. I know the FAO Schwartz area is ridiculous and I try to steer clear of there. I THINK (emphasis on think) the 50's had some nice empty areas. There's one spot where there are like metal bleachers set up... I know that's usually a pretty open area; though the bleachers are usually closed off to the general public... right across the street from there was def nice a bunch of times I went there. I'm sorry i don't have exact street numbers for you right now. If you knew my sense of direction.. haha you'd totally understand. I PROMISE though.. those areas do exist!!! I've def been there.

IDK why i find that to be so funny!! maybe it's the 'motherland' part. IDK.

John wants to go to Amsterdam just because! But ireland is sooo on the top of our list of places to go!!

Well i would imagine it's as big of a holiday in terms of the holy day it is...but much less of a party than it is in America. But I could be wrong...this is just what I figured. Pubs weren't even allowed to be open in Ireland on March 17th until the 1970s!!!!!

Where is he from?
I'm from mainly Claire and Sligo and then literally the other side is ALL OVER IRELAND!! Soo many counties it's crazy!!
