I've got your controversial topic for today!

Original post by yelley77

I was just out at lunch and pulled up behind a car that had a bumper sticker that said, 'I wish Hillary would have married O.J.' I was so that I almost got out of the car and smacked the driver. I don't care if you are republican, democrat, liberal, gay, straight, pro-life, pro-choice, PETA activist or monkey lover... but nothing irritates me more than IGNORANT, offensive bumper stickers.

Thoughts?

I saw a bumper sticker that read 'Obama is not president' (this was after he won).

Well jackasss you are living in the US, therefore he IS your prez. Now be gone

I feel the same way! I hate that!

Are you going to change the world by slapping a bumper sticker on your car? I didn't think so.

i cant speak for everyone that has bumper stickers, but for me its not about trying to change people's mind or anything... its about expressing myself and what i believe in.. if i change someones mind about a certain topic, then hey - great! if not, its not a big deal to me... it more about self-expression than anything else, KWIM?

Yeah I see what you're saying. It's weird how we all perceive it differently. I guess that I just assume that it's trying to change people's mind but now that you say that it makes more sense when you explain it. I feel like even if someone said something to me-for example something that was on a bumper sticker-I would hear how they delivered it, you know? I mean some are pretty self-explanatory but I think I get more upset when I read an ignorant bumper sticker than when someone tells an off-color joke. Maybe because you just sit there and stew about it in the car.

omg yeah no no no i would never have anything like THAT on my car lol

the 4 bumper stickers i have on my car read:

'better to build school rooms for the boys than prisons and gallows for the men'

'its easier to build strong boys than to repair broken men'

'he's not my president'

'free the west Memphis three www.wm3.org'

ETA: now if anyone sees these on a hyndai accent you can wave at me lol

People are SERIOUSLY nuts!! My mom and my aunt and I were at Roosevelt Field and we were waiting for a spot, then some guy came and tried to take it! So my aunt beeped and the guy gave us the finger with BOTH hands.. and backed up.. I said out the window how we were there first.. NOT EVEN cursing, screaming or anything.. welllllll we got out of the mall about 2 hours later and ALL 4 tires were slashed and there was a HUGEEEEEEEE scratch across the side of the car!!!

*this was in reply to what Denise was saying about crazy people.

personally im just not a huge fan of bumper stickers in general so i dont have any. i mean there are tactful ways of saying things though. for an example, i dont see anything wrong at all with something that says youre pro life (i personally am and feel very strongly about that. kinda surprised by the tone on the thread that is kinda harsh against ppl who dont believe in aborting babies as if thats a bad thing, but thats a sidenote) VERSUS saying something horrible against women who have made a different decision on that. i dont think the latter is right at all. so anyways, i guess my point is that there are ways to say what you stand for without ripping on the other side of it. unfortunately many bumper stickers are just kinda crass.

i dont think anybody has anything against those that are pro life. The examples given were those who said mean things to somebody going in for bc. Or like Danielle's example of a woman lets say who was raped and had an abortion.

I am pro-choice, but my views are simply bc i feel once abortion would become illegal that wouldn't stop women from having abortions and would go down the wrong path to get one, just like in places where its illegal or when it was illegal, women went to extreme measures to do it themselves or they went to unqualified physicians well those without a license in these back alley abortion clinics and some died or had serious issues. So i am pro choice for this reason. But i have nothing against those who are pro life, I completely understand your views and respect that. DH is pro life too and I have no problems with it, i do explain to him my side to try and show him that its not necessarily for the reasons he always thinks that ppl are pro choice.

So hope you didnt feel anybody attacked those who are pro life

I completely agree with you. Whether you like Hillary or not that is a terrible message. It is immoral and arrogant. I can't believe that is even legal to have on your car!

I don't think this is any worse than 'He is not my president'. I hate Hillary and I agree that the bumper sticker is wrong but I also feel the president one is extremely disrespectful as well. I honestly think we see things as funny or mean if we agree or disagree w/ it. In reading this post the same people who thought the Hillary one was awful found the 'he is not my president' to be funny..yet found the one mocking Obama to be rude LOL.

But any way you look at it.. they are just bumper stickers.. while I sometimes cringe when i see ridiculous statements, I think it is ok for people to display it. There are already so many things we can't say anymore just because it might hurt someone's feelings (such as 'Merry Christmas' ) Everyone needs to just get some thicker skin!

I think that there is a difference bw 'He is not my President' and the Hilary/OJ bumper sticker.

The difference is on one you are expressing your dislike

While in the other you are wishing a person was the victim of a violent homicide.

IMO it is pretty clear which is more offensive.

I agree with you in the sense that a bumper sticker that says, 'I'm pro-life' is tactful and just simply stating your beliefs. However, I've seen pro-life bumper stickers that are inappropriate (IMO) and I don't think things like that should be on bumper stickers. Not JUST regarding pro-life/pro-choice, but for every controversial topic in the world. I have no issues with bumper stickers that say 'McCain/Palin 08'.... I do have a probelm though when the bumper sticker says 'I wish Hillary would have married OJ'. EVERYONE in this world is entitled to their opinion and i truly respect the opinions that differ from mine... but just like there is a tactful way to say things, the same should go for bumper stickers...
