Jobs.....

With the economy the way it is, I was wondering...are there any jobs that are 'safe' these days? I would like to go into a more 'creative' field, but I worry...which is worse...corporate America, or the people staring their own business?

Re: Jobs.....

There was an article on yahoo a few days ago, maybe last week, that listed jobs that are considered 'safe' or good bets. if you search their featured articles you should find it.

You don't even know how much of a joke this is between DH and I. There was a time I really wanted to do this - I would love to work with dogs and I think that being a groomer is a great job. Not a ton of training and they make a good salary. It's not a joke for ME because I would love to do this, but DH jokes about it all the time.

Maybe now that I am laid off I can actually look into it!

Re: Jobs.....

Civil jobs and most people working for the government that are full time and are union. The worst that happens at this point is a salary freeze.

Teachers will be safe as long as budgets are passed. And this refers to non tenured teachers.

Finding a teaching job in NYC is much easier than LI.

I agree. Also education jobs are safe, although their are budget cuts looming once you are tenured their would need to be layoff's across the city for you to lose your job ( in NYC, long island is different).

For example if my school's budget was cut they may have to excess me which would mean I would try to find a job in another school...if a position wasn't available my school would continue to pay me because they can't let me go as per my union contract.

If the situation got dire and Bloomberg did city wide layoff''s those with the least time in the system would go first.

In other words once your in the Dept of ed your pretty safe. NYPD and FDNY also . HTH

This is true, the other thing hat makes NYC better the LI in regards to job security is the fact that in LI if the budget doesnt pass you only have WITHIN that DISTRICT to be guareented a job. In NYC if I am excessed bc of budget I have first crack of district, then borough, then the whole city. In other words they HAVE to find me a spot, it's easier to just be let go in LI bc its by district not LI as a whole.

Also I hear tenure is harder to come by in LI and you get 2 years child care leave right of return, NYC you get until your child enters kindergarten.

theres my DOE vs LI lesson ladies can you tell I have thought about if I shoud=ld apply in LI

Sorry I don't know about the certification process:(

The only thing I can think of is that in a bad economy, I would think that having a personal trainer would be considered a luxury more than a necessity. When times are tough the first things to go are things considered luxuries.

I think gov't and union jobs are safer than most. Healthcare, prob the safest of all. People need heathcare no matter what the economy is like...maybe even more so during tough times, depression about job loss may affect your health too

Re: Jobs.....

I'd say government is the safest right now. And they do need 'creative' people. More and more governments are doing business online so they need web designers, strategists and communications people that can help them educate the public.

Re: Jobs.....

I think social work is safe right now. the tougher conditions the world experiences the more mental health problems people have and social work is also in there with the health field - however its also the ones who will most likely be laid off within the health field but its still a fairly safe field to enter.

i disagree with the above post with needing creative work done. I know several people out of work for a year or more in an art field and they are so talented. its the last thing people want to pay for. anyone can make a website if they need to but if they want to pay for graphics and great layouts they are not able or willing to pay the money to hire a professional at this time. lots of people in any field are familiar enough with the computer that they are having their administrative assistants make up flyers with basic word art programs and printing them at kinkos. there is unfortunately no strong need for graphic designers from what i could see.

also, lets say you wanted to combine something like social work with art for like a art or music therapy - thats hard too - i know of agencies do not have the money to pay for a licensed art therapist - they get someone that likes and is good with music/art but has no trained therapy skills and pays them a lot less to spend time with the clients.

good luck!
