Just out of curiousity

Original post by yelley77

If your DH proposed without a ring, would you have said yes?

You can just take the poll if you don't want to share.

lol i think you are looking too into this lol. I just thought if i would, didnt think of dh's personality or anything like that. If so then i think most guys would get the ring no matter bc they want to do it(well maybe not always lol) but want to do it for what it symbolizes and to make everything traditional. I guess i am used to it though, my mom didnt have an e-ring, none of my aunts or any older family members. It just wasnt part of the culture back then and something just not done.

Thank you for clarifying.. it has nothing to do with anything other than, if there was no way DH could give you a traditional engagement ring, would you marry him anyway.

My DH would never propose without a ring -- i was just thinking hypothetically -- if he asked without a ring would i have said yes and the answer is yes.

i'm sure that all of us would choose marrying DH....

I wasn't so sure that would be everyone's answer, that is why I asked the question. There are some VERY traditional girls who don't agree with my beliefs...

I think I should clarify-

it is not that I would think less of DH or of his love for me or if we are going to get married. I want to wear it on my hand so to speak. It is a symbol to me of being spoken for. It could be a CZ in a setting for all I care!! It was a token of the question.

I would still be married to him with or with out it. And god forbid we ever needed the money,, I would sell it and replace it with a fake.

yeah i think this question is too broad if any of us had to choose marrying DH over getting an engagement ring or any type of wedding related jewelry i'm sure that all of us would choose marrying DH....i would marry DH in a potato sack with no jewelry if i had too - but i think if the exact day he proposed it would be really weird if he didn't have a ring.....i would be lying if i said i wouldn't be hurt or disappointed - i probably would have wondered why he wouldn't 'want' to get me a ring - kwim?

i think we all would wonder that, i would feel the same way and say 'ok well is this serious right now is this something you put thought into or something that just popped into your head now' i would wonder how serious he is just bc i wouldnt know if this was something he really gave alot of thought to and really wanted. BUT only bc it has become tradition and what were all told is the process, you get the ring then the wedding.

You have to think of it like this, too -- how many guys go out, buy a ring b/c they are 'serious' and then the engagement ends before the marriage or the couple gets divorced. I don't think a ring ENSURES that you will get married, or live a happy life -- it's jewelry... i get what it symbolizes -- but isn't it what he says at that moment when he proposes that means the most? or the vows he says? that is the REAL promise, isn't it?

i actually did that too. Our situation was complicated, but I actually did go dress shopping and hall scouting before i had the ring on my finger. Like I said, our situation was just more complicated than most because of our long distance. The ring was NOT the most important part of it all, but needless to say, I was overjoyed when he actually got onto his knee and put that diamond on my finger.

very very very true. The ring doesnt keep a marriage strong or honestly really has absolutely nothing to do with a marriage. It was an old tradition from way back bc a queen was given a ring and the jewelry industry jumped on the opportunity, its kind of a marketing idea lol. The ring doesnt get us through fights, or what makes the good times. Its just there to show hey i am engaged. Of course we all love our rings so not like im saying 'ugh ring means nothing' but if that queen never got a ring and never became a tradition bc of that, hey we'd all be getting married without an e-ring. I wouldnt give it up now lol but the ring isnt what made me want to marry dh

thank you for understanding my initial question

Do i love my ring -- OF COURSE, do i love what it stands for -- ABSOLUTELY, would i be sick if i ever lost it - YES but at the end of the day, I come home to my DH and he tells me just about everyday that he loves spending his life with me... that is more than any piece of jewelry could ever do.

And the Hallmark is sort of like the Queen -- Capitalizing on a gimmick. (like tilde was saying the other day)

My mom did not have an engagement ring, and they've been happily married for 33 years!

Re: Just out of curiousity

I would have defiantly said yes without an engagement ring! .. but I think I would want the wedding band, because I loved our ceremony with exchanging rings KWIM? Obviously I love both of my rings, and I'm so grateful that my DH was able to afford a gorgeous ring etc, and that ring means the world to me, because its from him, not because its a diamond etc. ... I don't NEED something to symbolize the love we share, but I of course love that I do have something for the rest of the world to see, I guess is what I mean? I dunno I'm bad at trying to say what I mean lol

I voted yes... but honestly... DH proposes... aren't you secretly thinking, 'where's the ring??'

Obviously... it's tradition. The man proposes, the woman gets a ring.

i don't know.....i honestly think i would be insulted....im just trying to be honest.....i don't know, i can't realistically imagine the circumstances of why he wouldn't get me a ring - i mean its not the ring that is important but the fact that he worked so hard for it and took so much time trying to find something perfect for me - all that really meant a lot to me....he sacrificed a lot to get me a ring and there is meaning behind that......i don't know - its hard to say b/c things happened one way and i can't imagine it any other way

I agree with exactly what you said. I don't mean to sound materialistic at all...and perhaps like Nicole said its hard for me to imagine it any other way but I know the hard work he put into getting the ring...and it is a symbol that is important,,,,it says to the world I am promised to him....I dont know again if I were in a different situation I may feel differently...

ETA: My mom got married without an ering and years later got one. But for me I just truly cannot picture DH proposing without a ring.....maybe it's just the culture of the world today but I think he'd think it'd wierd.

Re: Just out of curiousity

I guess if he really couldnt afford it but was madly in love with me and couldnt wait until he could of afforded one to marry me....then yes, I would still say yes. However, if I knew he had the money (at least for something simple) and didnt buy a ring..thats a diff. story

Of course. A ring doesnt dictate whether he loves me or not.
