Just out of curiousity

Original post by yelley77

If your DH proposed without a ring, would you have said yes?

You can just take the poll if you don't want to share.

I voted yes - if it were a matter of money then yes. Its hard to picture though because DH is a traditionalist and even if he didnt have the money he would work extra hard to get the money. But in the end I would have done it without the ring. I love my ring so much but sometimes feel so horrible to have it, knowing that people are losing jobs, homeless, etc.

Ok also of my friends is planning a wedding for this summer without being engaged. Its not about the money its about asking for her hand in marriage...her parents are retired and away in Florida and so he hasnt been able to ask yet. He should have asked over Xmas but he didnt for some reason. Not my business and I dont care, I am happy for her!

Yes, but i would tell him lets go to kohls and get a fakey! lol ...honestly i just wouldnt want to hear it from everyone, its happy time, you dont need the extra drama, and well its fun being engaged and having people notice you wearing a ring and congratulating you!

Also I have thought about this some more - I would ask my mom for my grandmother's stone or for Dh's grandmothers stone. Just a thought.

Also I think girls without rings get alot of this from friends because so many people dont understand the no ring thing

Absolutely! I told DH a few times that I didn't need a ring. After 9 years he could have just said 'marry me' and I would have been so happy.

If he couldn't AFFORD a ring and we couldn't afford to support ourselves - its one thing.

If he asked me on the spur of the moment when he realized he was MADLY in love with me ::insert hair flip here:: and wanted to marry me - I wouldn't have cared haha. I really wouldn't - I know a lot of girls might roll their eyes, but for me - it wasn't about the ring.

love the insert flip of hair

But I agree. I wouldn't care either it definitely wasnt about the ring!!

Even if he didn't have the money (not poor, but maybe saving for a house or the start of yourlives together) and said, 'I love you. let's get married, start our lives together and not spend the money in the bank on a wedding, but for a house'

i'd still say yes -- that is what it is all about the the two of us

i agree with this as well Danielle. My friend is looking to get engaged and her boyfriend said your ring has siding, a fireplace, a roof, nice new applicances cause he wants to save for a house first or becuse she kinda wants a house as well I think he is kinda saying well it's one or the other right now.

I would've yes. Its funny but my mom never had an e-ring. It just wasnt something that was done, it was a cultural thing i guess. But nobody then had one. Now they are doing it and copying alot of things from american weddings. But my mom had no e-ring and got married. THey did have wedding bands though.

Nicole-i think it was more about what if lets just say he couldn't or what if he was one of those ppl who were AGAINST diamonds, there are ppl who say dont buy diamonds bc of the whole Africa thing and how you get them, ive met some ppl who are completely against them, but lets just say hypothetically. I understand what your saying, we all can relate, with our dh's doing stuff for us and wanting us to have that.

i don't know.....i honestly think i would be insulted....im just trying to be honest.....i don't know, i can't realistically imagine the circumstances of why he wouldn't get me a ring - i mean its not the ring that is important but the fact that he worked so hard for it and took so much time trying to find something perfect for me - all that really meant a lot to me....he sacrificed a lot to get me a ring and there is meaning behind that......i don't know - its hard to say b/c things happened one way and i can't imagine it any other way

I completely agree!

Yesssss!! With or Without a ring, I would marry him! I remember in the beginning, we'd talk about our future and I KNEW that i wanted to be with him no matter what. I admit that I would have been disappointed if he would have proposed without a ring, but I still would have said Yes. I remember I used to tell him that if he could only afford a RingPop, I'd still marry him with it

Re: Just out of curiousity

I hope no one gets offended when I say this...but if the ring is important to some people (not targeting anyone I am just speaking generally) then why do some of those woman also only wear their wedding band out or always (either because their e-ring doesnt fit with their band or because they just want to wear their wedding band etc.)

I mean like someone else said as long as I had a $% wedding band (which I don't even need to actually symbolize my love) I would be happy!!! I said yes not bec of the ring or the size, cut, clarity but because i want to spend the rest of my life with this man. To me the ring is just an added bonus it doesn't say HEY I AM ENGAGED OR MARRIED. I can tell people that myself.

I kept telling him I didn't need or want a ring. He wouldn't propose without one. He was worried what my family would think.

The ring is beautiful, and I love it. But I love my wedding band more for what it symbolizes. In fact, I only wear my ER on special occasions now, anyway.

Denise I think there is definitely a cultural thing that goes on as well. FIL and MIL don't ever wear wedding rings/erings. I actually think my MIL sold her ering (that she didn't even get when they first got married) haha I am surprised she sold it but I think that is what DH said. But I guess it doesnt mean that much to them to ahve a ring on to show it.

Ditto. I usually only wear my wedding band for the exact reason.

i love DH and if i had no other way to be his wife then to get married at city hall then that is what i would do - and i would do it without any rings at all - its just weird to think of it happening another way - and its hard to imagine him having a reason not to get me a ring.....i would marry him no matter what - b/c i love him - but i feel like if he was the type to not get me a ring then he wouldn't be 'him' anymore - like its just weird for me to picture a realistic scenario.....i know the question was easy - yes or no and i think i'm looking into it too much i'm just being difficult

Re: Just out of curiousity

oh and i just wanted to add that i barely wear my ering anymore....a few times a week to work and thats about it unless we are going out.....i dont even wear my wedding band all the time....i dont wear any jewlery when i am inside the house......so for me it has nothing to do with the actual jewelry......but i like the signifigance (sp) behind both of my rings......but i dont need any jewelry to feel married that is what the tattoo is for j/k j/k

i don't know, it would just be weird if DH didn't give me a ring - hard to picture happening IRL that's all

Re: Just out of curiousity

I think I should clarify-

it is not that I would think less of DH or of his love for me or if we are going to get married. I want to wear it on my hand so to speak. It is a symbol to me of being spoken for. It could be a CZ in a setting for all I care!! It was a token of the question.

I would still be married to him with or with out it. And god forbid we ever needed the money,, I would sell it and replace it with a fake.

lol i think you are looking too into this lol. I just thought if i would, didnt think of dh's personality or anything like that. If so then i think most guys would get the ring no matter bc they want to do it(well maybe not always lol) but want to do it for what it symbolizes and to make everything traditional. I guess i am used to it though, my mom didnt have an e-ring, none of my aunts or any older family members. It just wasnt part of the culture back then and something just not done.

yeah i think this question is too broad if any of us had to choose marrying DH over getting an engagement ring or any type of wedding related jewelry i'm sure that all of us would choose marrying DH....i would marry DH in a potato sack with no jewelry if i had too - but i think if the exact day he proposed it would be really weird if he didn't have a ring.....i would be lying if i said i wouldn't be hurt or disappointed - i probably would have wondered why he wouldn't 'want' to get me a ring - kwim?

i think we all would wonder that, i would feel the same way and say 'ok well is this serious right now is this something you put thought into or something that just popped into your head now' i would wonder how serious he is just bc i wouldnt know if this was something he really gave alot of thought to and really wanted. BUT only bc it has become tradition and what were all told is the process, you get the ring then the wedding.
