Kew Gardens/Forest Hills? Any of you live there?

DH and I wandered around Kew Gardens/Forest Hills! We're looking to move outside of NYC and considering all neighborhoods.

Any of you gals live out there and can tell us a little about it? Where we should look? We would love to be close to the subways or LIRR.

TIA!!!

I have a friend who lives in kew gardens off of queens blvd on 82nd rd. It's a really great location b/c she's close to the LIRR and the subway. Forest Hills is also really nice but you have to look for locations that are in walking distance to the subway, I guess it's the same thing with kew gardens.

I do

i love the area, and the good thing is that its full of co-ops and condo's. Austin street is real nice, lots of great shops and restaurants, so if you get something near there it would be goo, yellowstone is right by it so if you see that in listings you can know its close by. The LIRR is always on austin street. The Kew gardens LIRR stop is on austin and lefferts but its a bit further from the austin street i mentioned above.

Theres a couple of high rises on queens blvd, or right off of queens blvd, if thats what you want. Theres also nice pre-war co-op buildings. I love the windsor court and hampton court, and its right across the street from Forest Park which might be a plus for you.

Ooh, that sounds wonderful. We're more into the pre-war type apartments! Thank you for this info!

Are there fun restaurants/stores I should check out?

I LOVE the pre-war apartments too, i prefer those. They have higher ceilings and beautiful architecture.

CABANA- its on austin street, its cuban food and one of my favorite restaurants. Theres also Mardi Gras which is creole food. One day you and your DH should just go to austin street, maybe in the daytime to do some shopping. I love Maiko, O boutique, OZ. But they also have banana republic, sephora, victoria's secret, and much more. Theres also a johnny rockets if youre in the mood for a burger, oh and marthas country bakery MMMM best cupcakes hahaha.

look on www.MLSLI.com, they have tons of apartments in forest hills and kew gardens. This way you can also see which building you might be interested in by seeing what the apartments are like

Awesome, thank you Denise. DH and I are going again this Saturday afternoon to check out more of the area. He's wary because he's from NJ and all he knows is Manhattan. I'm from Long Island and I know that alot of young, fun people live in Forest Hills/Kew Gardens. I'm trying to open up his mind and not think only 'brooklyn' or 'hoboken'

Those are some great listings of restaurants etc!!! I can't wait to explore some more!

I don't live too far from there and I love to just walk Austin St./ Forest Hills.
My sister works in NYC and commutes from the train station from Kew Gardens which seems convenient for her.
Cabana is also my fave restaurant to eat at and I actually think I do most of my shopping there too when I don't want to go to the mall. Oh and my co-workers rave about A&J Pizzeria. My family has also had several parties at Portofino and the food is good there too.
I also remember seeing a thread topic that said something about a Forest Hills condo for sale. I would search the NW board a bit if you were interested in looking.

My vote for Cabana..it's my fave! I also live near by. I love the neighborhood. Don't forget the movie theater I always buy my gowns from OZ. I even bought my DOJ jewelery at 71st Con.

My favorite part of living in Forest Hills, I am on 76th between austin and queens blvd. is the sense of community. There are a ton of young people but also familys and you recognize people on the streets. When i lived in manhatten i didn't even know my neighbors names but know i know most of the building.

Good luck if you move there. We love it!!

yeah its normal to feel that way, whenever you go anywhere very different than where you grew up its hard. Plus theres so many stereotypes and many arent true so its good to see for himself.

ITs good if youre going on a saturday in the daytime. It is very lively and will be a nice afternoon.

a&j pizzeria is VERY good. I go there sometimes to eat a quick lunch, they have alot of other good stuff too.

oh and cindy, right next to cabana is a japenese place and also a french place. So you have one place next to another on that block you can pick from, depending on which you would prefer

I didn't live there but always hung out on Austin Street (if I wanted to stay local) being that I used to live in Elmhurst. Forest Hills is awesome. There is so much to do. Piu Bello use to be one of my favorite spots.

Yes, people are corrupting him with stereotypes and I'm doing my darndest to change his mind! I'm telling him that lots of young people like us live there! There are tons of restaurants/things to do and it's so close to NYC!!! Plus, I'm kinda sick of living in Manhattan and want a change of pace AND we need space!

Yeah ive heard alot of stereotypes lol, some are funny but people just do that with things they don't know.

Is this the only area in queens you're looking at? If you want young and lively area, i have to say that astoria and LIC are also great for this. I lived most of my life in astoria and now live here. Theres more bars/lounges and night spots in astoria than here in forest hills thats one thing. And its closer to the city, lic is even closer to the city than astoria. I love all 3 areas, and think any 3 would be perfect for what youre looking for.

I think we're defiinitely going to check out Astoria as well (we're doing the run of all potential neighborhoods) but I do love the tree lined streets etc. of Forest Hills/Kew Gardens. Is Astoria similar? I've had some great meals in Astoria (my dad works there and has taken me to some amazing Greek restaurants)
