DH and I wandered around Kew Gardens/Forest Hills! We're looking to move outside of NYC and considering all neighborhoods.
Any of you gals live out there and can tell us a little about it? Where we should look? We would love to be close to the subways or LIRR.
TIA!!!

[ Is this the only area in queens you're looking at? If you want young and lively area, i have to say that astoria and LIC are also great for this. I lived most of my life in astoria and now live here. Theres more bars/lounges and night spots in astoria than here in forest hills thats one thing. And its closer to the city, lic is even closer to the city than astoria. I love all 3 areas, and think any 3 would be perfect for what youre looking for.
I think we're defiinitely going to check out Astoria as well (we're doing the run of all potential neighborhoods) but I do love the tree lined streets etc. of Forest Hills/Kew Gardens. Is Astoria similar? I've had some great meals in Astoria (my dad works there and has taken me to some amazing Greek restaurants)
you do get more tree lined streets in forest hills/kew gardens. Theres some streets like this in astoria but on blocks where theres one family homes, not apartments. Also you will find more apts in forest hills/kew gardens and different ranges. In astoria the apts are going to be more expensive in most of the buildings, you can find some for less but you will have to do more work.
YEah astoria is known for its restaurants, they have many great ones and even people i know who live in the city come to astoria all the time to eat. FOrest hills does have great restaurants though, astoria has a bit more and more variety. In forest hills theres not really many bars or lounges or cafes. Theres Piu bello but its more to get coffee and sit outside for a bit, theres bartini i went once it was ok. The nightlife is definitely better in astoria. You can go to restaurants at night in forest hills, and the bar at 5 burro a mexican restaurant gets good and stays open late but other than that not many choices, we usually go to the city or astoria to go out at night.
Like i said both are great, you just have to see for yourself and see which place feels better for you

I live in FH in one of the huge buildings right on autin and yellowstone blvd. I love it , and there are tons of places to eat and shop . I was in a pre war building and now i am in post war and I prefer the post war for various reasons .

there are many buildings that have a garage. Also depending which block exactly, there might be parking on the street. Some parts are very hard with parking but there are still some areas where its not that bad.

this is true, if you are in back of austin street, closer to the gardens area you can park. Most buildings have a waiting list , my building i pay 250$ just to park my car and it makes me sick but i live right by austin and yellowstone/queens blvd so there is nowhere to park unless you are lucky

i have to say it depends on your schedule and where you are in queens. I'm closer to the rego park border and because DH uses the car for work and doesn't need it parked during the day, he rarely has any problems getting parking when he gets home; he can park at a 9-7 meter spot. even on the weekend when i take it I find parking. He was going to look into the garage option b/c my building doesn't have one, but he doesn't even think he needs to now.

Cindy where did you end up going on Saturday? You might just want to look at the NY times and see if there are open houses - that's how I found my place and it's a great way to wander around the neighborhood.
I agree with Denise and I do think there are more tree-lined areas in FH/KG... more so than most other parts of queens i've lived in and it's great to have forest park nearby. I LOVED some areas of KG like Park Lane south - it's beautiful over there - but I wanted to be closer to the subway. Lately though when we're out late we've been taking the LIRR home from Manhattan - it's so much quicker and only $3 or $3.50 on the weekends (woo hoo City ticket! - you should use that if you don't take the subway on saturday!)
Some of my favorite places nearby to eat, all around Austin Street: Irish Cottage - so cutely decorated and AMAZING burgers (esp turkey burgers! that's where I ate Friday night) Cabana - good spanish food, usually a wait Jade - right by the LIRR; asian fusion, we get sushi here a lot and it's kind of sceney and fun Thai Pot on QB - pretty decent thai food! Mardi Gras is good for different/creole food PJ's steakhouse - we've been there once but it was very yummy
Also further but NOT to be overlooked is Metropolitan Avenue - Bill and I will walk over there - it's usually our night out from my place it's further b/c i'm not in forest hills central so it's like a 15-20 minute walk - TONS of great places: 1. DB - Danny Brown - is awesomely amazing! small plates, great wine 2. Alberto's for italian is DELISH 3. Eddie's Sweet Shop has been around forever and is totally old school and has yummy sundaes 4. Cannot forget Dee's pizza, it's super well-rated, brick oven thin crust and all the food is yummy there! we love it.
and there's a Trader Joe's right on Woodhaven/Metropolitan that I just discovered.
okay I could go on and on but this is probably long enough. What time are you guys coming in Saturday? I have a midterm to study for but i would love to meet you for lunch or dinner!

Re: Kew Gardens/Forest Hills? Any of you live there?
I absolutely LOVE forest hills...we've been here for 2 years now. it's the perfect mix of city/residential...it's BEAUTIFUL and packed with things to do lots of families..just a really nice community :) we picked it over Kew Gardens mainly 'cause of the apt. that we fell in love with, and that it's even closer to manhattan. i'd say Forest Hills, Kew Gardens, Astoria are probably some of the most convenient not to mention super safe & PACKED with things to do.. I'm on Metropolitan and 72nd. ave...
ps: Cabana and Martha's Bakery are both fantastic!!! Also check out Pampas(new argentinian place) and Danny Brown's Wine bar..both on Metropolitan..
and Eddie's Sweet Shop down on Metropolitan as well..it's an old fashion ice-cream/soda shop..SO yummy! They make everything from scratch and they still have all the original stuff from waaay back when!
what are ur specs on apt. hunting??? (#of bedrooms, etc??)

I lived in Forest Hills for about 6 years with my parents before I got moved out and it was great. You have everything around you, stores, restaurants, movie theaters, etc... My mom is actually selling her high rise condo but its nothing close to pre-war unfortunately. FH is definitely a great place to live!

have you been to MoCa yet or however it's spelled? it just opened on that same block as Uno's and I think Cabana? we were at Uno's one night and saw all these girls dressed up like they were clubbing come out. My sister just went to the one in Hewlett and said it was really good so i was wondering if anyone tried this one yet.
