DH and I try to only run it 3 times a week but then we have dishes piling up so we'll hand wash instead.
are we really saving that much water by doing this?

Re: Kind of a spin-off of Going Green
I've run my dishwasher 3 times since I moved to my apt.
It's not becasue I'm going green but I just have always washed dishes by hand.

Re: Kind of a spin-off of Going Green
we have the GE energy save dishwasher.. i think it uses like 40% less energy and less water or something.. i try to use the dishwasher every 2 weeks, like when i cook large amounts, or multiple different things and stuff.. but otherwise we do dishes by hand.. whatever we pots and pans i used to cook, i have to do by hand, anything dishes and glasses, Dh and I do by hand during the week..
i must say, it does help if you just get at the dishes right away.. some stuff needs a good soaking but otherwise, i just clean them and put them in the dishwasher to dry out.. and sometimes i clean as i cook, just to minimize the load in the end..

DH and i were just talking about this over the weeekend.... i try to alternate the usage of the dishwasher... so one sink load i will put it in the dishwasher and the next sink load i will wash by hand.... usually it gets ran 2 times a week

I feel like by washing by hand I use more water. ... letting it run while I do them. Etc... Am I wrong?

i have heard that too.. if you let it run full force as your are scrubbing, and you have sink full of dishes i could see how it adds up to be more..
also i have heard ny water is recycled water... is it true?

thats how I hand wash them too. i try to shut it off and then flip it back on to rinse but its easier to just scrub under the water as it runs.
my mom fills up a bucket with water and just uses that for every dish... by the end the water in the bucket is disgusting looking!

i totally agree, but then again all that water is being used in the dishwasher. we run it a few times a week. although i hand wash all our pots & pans b/c they can't go in the dishwasher, but thankfully they clean very easy (even when i burn stuff )

I probably run my dishwasher once a week, but that is because we never eat at home.

same here all pots and stemware are handwashed no matter what. i guess its the same amount of water no matter what?
i still feel bad running it. well when we get a house we'll get an energy saving dishwasher---uh if we can afford one

Re: Kind of a spin-off of Going Green
I say once a week, maybe two times. We cook 3-4 times a week but when DH travels I dont really cook.
Also are you handwashing pots, cutting boards, pyrex, big things? I always handwash that stuff to save room in the dishwasher

I've heard that too. I rinse dishes before I put them in the machine, run my dishwasher when there's a full load, every other day or three, and run it on an energy saver cycle. Very rarely do I find residue on the dishes. Whatever can't go in the dishwasher gets washed by hand.

We don't run our dishwasher until it's full. Some things we hand wash (like the dog's food dishes) but usually everything will go in the dishwasher and we'll run it when it's full.
