DH and I try to only run it 3 times a week but then we have dishes piling up so we'll hand wash instead.
are we really saving that much water by doing this?

We don't run our dishwasher until it's full. Some things we hand wash (like the dog's food dishes) but usually everything will go in the dishwasher and we'll run it when it's full.
That's what they tell you to do anyway right? This helps conserve the water and you can get more done at once. It is better than standing with the water running in the sink doing dishes by hand.
They even have dishwashers that have a 'small cylce' so it uses less water too right? I think that's cool.

Same here. I use the no heat dry cycle to save (some) energy. Also running it at night costs less than running it during the day

I do it all by hand daily. I can't handle the sink piling up with dishes. If it gets too full then I just get overwhelmed and never do it at all. lol. So I've learned to do everything a little at a time
If i had a dishwasher tho, I could see myself using it maybe twice a week. That's pretty much how often I have to do the laundry

Same here. If there is room when it's almost full, I sometimes throw a pot or a pan in there. But usually, I wash those by hand to save room and also so that I can use them the next night - I don't have that many!
