knowing its coming doesn't make it much easier ...

knowing its coming doesn't make it much easier ...

Well, after a long 8 year battle, my Uncle lost his battle with ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease) yesterday. He had the 'slow kind' which isn't necessarily a good thing -- it just prolongs the stages. It did give him more time with his family, but his quality of life at the end wasn't something I'd wish on anyone.

His daughter just got engaged after our wedding and was planning an April 2009 wedding, His son's wife is due in June with their first child. Her baby shower is in a few weeks.

The funeral is in Florida where they lived, and there's no way I can get on a plane right now. The flights to and from our honeymoon in St. Lucia were the absolute worst physical torture I've experienced.

I need to call my cousin. I just don't know what to say

Life suuccks!

So sorry to hear about your loss.
And yes, knowing its coming doesn't make it easier. You still lose someone you loved.

He'll be in your heart forever, as will he be in his children's.
As the saying goes, g-d takes one life to make room for another, in this case his grandchild.

I am so sorry for your loss. Many prayers for your family and the family of your uncle.

I know right know things have been tough but just take comfort in that your uncle is no longer suffering or in pain.

I'm so bad at this stuff ... I don't even know what to say to my cousin.

How do you comfort someone who's lost their dad???

I remember when my mom died, people were telling me things and I just wasn't registering any of it. I also knew it was coming, but still at that moment when she died, it was just my mommy's gone forever.

Just tell your cousin that you are so sorry that he's gone, at least he is not suffering anymore. He will always be in her (his) heart forever and watching over them.

No, no, no, they live in Florida.

I went to St. Lucia on my honeymoon, thats the last time I was on a plane, and it was horrible for me. I was in so much pain on the flights.

Sorry if I was confusing.

I think you just tell them how sorry you are, let them know you are there if you need anything, and maybe recount a nice memory you have. I'm sure that they will understand that you aren't able to make it down there. I'm so sorry you are faced with this right now.

I'm so sorry, Jess!! As for talking to your cousin, just say you're sorry and let her know you're there. When I lost my Dad, it just felt good to know that people cared. Nothing you say can make the pain go away but knowing people care helps.
