DH & I are thinking of getting a kitten. We live in a 1 bedroom garden apartment and I wouldn't want the cat going outside to relieve him/herself; so we would have to have a litter box. (DH only had outdoor cats growing up, and I've had dogs)
My question is.... is the litter box going to smell up the apartment regardless of how often or what type of litter you use? Maybe someone could recommend a good kitty litter, b/c this is the only thing that's making me apprehensive of getting a kitty.
TIA!!!

Re: Ladies who have cats
I've had two indoor cats (not two at the same time). I've never had a problem with the litter box smelling. I use Fresh Step and sometimes i get the arm & hammer baking soda. They make one specifically for litter boxes. I've only lived in small apartments with both cats. The only time i've ever smelled a litter box is in a house that has more than one cat. Good luck on getting a kitten, they are so cute when they're tiny!

We have 3 indoors girls, and its a 1 bedroom apartment. As long as you're diligent about scooping & cleaning it regularly, you shouldn't have a problem.

We use 'Swheat Scoop' b/c of Mima's asthma, but the good thing about it is its made of wheat, so its totally flushable, which is a plus fo rme.

What would constitute being diligent? Every day, many times a day, every other day, you coming over to do it, etc, etc?

Well, I'm certainly not coming over to do it, b/c my only mode of transportation is roller skates. I scoop EVERY time there's poop, and once a day for peeps, and then I clean the whole box out and put fresh litter ever 5 days or so... but I have 3. When it was just Mima, I only had to clean it once a week.

I was thinking of scooping every day or multiple times a day, but I wasn't sure if that was a little OCD or not.

If you smell poop, you gotta scoop.

If you see peepee, go build a tee-pee.

Re: Ladies who have indoor cats
The only time I smell my sister's cat is when I go to the basement to do laundry and he JUST poo'd.
She has a 4 yr old so she scoops frequently. Kids get curious haha

Re: Ladies who have indoor cats
The only time my baby's litter box stinks is when she JUST poops. The Fresh Step covers up the smell really well.

Re: Ladies who have indoor cats
when i first got my kitty, i lived in a SMALL apt. i had a covered litter box (still do) and we never ever ever smelled anything from the litter box. the only time would be if she pooped right at that second, or if she got poop stuck to her fur. i was bad then, i scooped every other day, but it never ever smelled. we use fresh step, and it's the best for us. i tried to change it once, but she did NOT like it.
