Last night DH comes home with....a puppy! (need advice) updated with picture!

We werent planning on getting a puppy until we moved in and things settled down a bit....so he comes home with an adorable poodle/maltese mix yesterday and i was shocked that he didnt even tell me....so he then proceeds to give me this whole story about how he had to take him home with us otherwise this little guy was going into a shelter...(sigh lol)

Anyways my question is this...i already have a four year old dog and she has been depressed all of last night. And this morning she is moping around the house. She doesnt want me to touch her b/c she cant stand the new smell of another dog and she growls and barks at him whenever he tries to approach her. I feel so badly to see Bella hurting like this. Will the siutation get better? Will they learn to love each other?

awwwwwwwwwwwwwww soooo cute!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Bella will come around soon.... she just needs some time to realize that this is an addition, not a replacement.

Milana! Its totally normal !! I was in the same situation. When I brought my second girl cocker spaniel home, my first was all sad and mad, with that 'dont come near me attitude'. You'll see, within the next 2 or 3 weeks....they will BOND and become a pack. TRUST ME. Happens almost everytime. So no worries , ok?!

just a thought ... but you mentioned that you guys haven't moved into the new house yet ...

i wonder if that will help fix things when you do move in ...

cause where you are living now is bella's house, her territory.

the new house doesn't 'belong' to either of them .... kwim?

good advice. . i know nothing of Dogs but I know that the same rule does not apply to cats. If they don't like each other there is no hope.. they just deal but still hate each other and there is always cat fights! What a disaster that was for me some time ago. Sounds like dogs adapt better.

OMG he is so cute!!! Bella will come around! Congrats on the new pup and hte big move this weekend, how exciting!

I would looooooove to get another dog... not enough space says dh (sigh).

WOw...he is the cutest thing ever!

I think they will grow to love eachother...I have heard there may be issues at first.

My 2 dogs did the same thing. They hated eachother and I was so worried. I bet it will get better over time....90% they will learn to love eachother.

SOOOO cute! Yes DH should have spoken up but his heart was in the rigth place. We have cats not dogs but Zoe was almost 3 when we brought Simon in and teh first few days she was liek 'EWW GET AWAY!'' But now she loves him and is REALLY tolerant of him though she hates most other cats. Sometimes she hisses when he pisses eher off too much, but if he cried or yelps she is immediately 'mommy cat.'

Bella will come around and when she does she will probably treat him like her baby. Colette had great advice-thats what we did with Zoe and it worked really well.

You can also be sneaky. Take a sock of yours that been worn (they like your scent) and put it wherever the puppy sleeps for a day or two, THEN put it into Bella's area and see how she reacts. We did this and it worked really well because its incorporating both scents. She knows yours and is comforted by it so its a gentler way of introducing his.

We still put socks in their cat beds when we wash them until they get used to the smell all over again.

Awww!! Congrats on the new pup...he adorable!!!! When we brought home our 2nd dog DH & i joked that Buddy (our first) was going to walk out in front of a car and end it all because he was so upset...but now he has adjusted and is back to his happy playful self...just give it some time...soon you'll be one big happy family!

It will get better.. Chico moped around the house like he was on suicide watch when we brough Mimi home and now they are like the best of friends!!!

The puppy is too cute! Give your older dog a little time. They'll be friends in a while. Also don't be too mad at your DH, I think he was trying to be romantic. Which was very sweet. Yes he should have talked to first you, but I think he wanted to surprise you and make you happy.
