Last night DH comes home with....a puppy! (need advice) updated with picture!
We werent planning on getting a puppy until we moved in and things settled down a bit....so he comes home with an adorable poodle/maltese mix yesterday and i was shocked that he didnt even tell me....so he then proceeds to give me this whole story about how he had to take him home with us otherwise this little guy was going into a shelter...(sigh lol)
Anyways my question is this...i already have a four year old dog and she has been depressed all of last night. And this morning she is moping around the house. She doesnt want me to touch her b/c she cant stand the new smell of another dog and she growls and barks at him whenever he tries to approach her. I feel so badly to see Bella hurting like this. Will the siutation get better? Will they learn to love each other?
Meet Louie - he looks just like Bella when she was a puppy! <3 (sorry for the blurryness he wont sit still)

i know his heart was in the right place---but its a shame that your DH brought the puppy home w/o talking to you about it first and really coming to the decision together. sometimes guys just don't think!
i think you'll just have to see how they are together...obviously you're dog is feeling very jealous about having to share the house.....i would see how they interact and such and make sure that neither one becomes a danger to the other. sometimes it can take a few days or even weeks for them to get along!

OMG Milana it will ABSOLUTELY get better, don't fret!!! They will establish their 'rules' very soon, Bella's just a little freaked out, its JUST like bringing a baby home -- the older kid is going to feel a little 'disenfranchised' no matter what!! But just make sure that Bella has a 'neutral' zone she can go to when she's had enough of the puppy. She's older and might not be too thrilled with puppy antics all day long. Also make sure Bella gets some SPECIAL treats when she's good with the puppy, like a teeny piece of cheese, or peanut butter, anything she'd love that's not a usual treat. She'll start to see puppy as the *best* thing since sliced bread... Give them a couple of days to work things out, Bella will perk up!!!!

YEs, they will get along-it will take a little bit but sooner or later they will be used to each other and will get along great.

TY so much for your responses! I really hope Bella comes around to him (we named him Louie) so with time i hope this gets better! Bella slept in our bed the entire night because she reufsed to sleep in her bed since the puppy was wandering about the house.
Collette i will definitly try that! Reward her when she plays nice!
I will go take a pic of him right now lol.

they definately will!!! When I introduced my yorkie to my other dog they would ignore each other but now they are inseperable!! Dont worry!!! Its better to have two dogs anyway!!! They have company when you guys are away!

OMG I cried when I bought Daisy home because my little boomer hated her. Now they are the best of friends. Dont worry it wont take long!!!! Good luck with your little baby

I don't have any advice, but I think Colette's advice about praising and rewarding Bella when she's good with Louie will work wonders!!!
Congrats on the new puppy - we need pics please!!!
Also, I would LOVE to get another dog in the future. Right now we have a 2 1/2 year old mixed terrier girl... I would like another female dog in the future - Does anyone know, is this ok??? Or is it better to have a male dog since I already have a female?

Thanks all for your advice! I feel alot better that many of you have had positive experiances with two dogs in the house.
Yesi i read that its better to bring in a dog of the opposite sex otherwise there is competition...Bella doesnt seem to be competing with Louie for attention... we are defintly showering her with it especially now that hes in the house, she just seems really upset and annoyed about the situation.
Taking a pic right now hes sleeping so not making it easy lol.

he is so cute, and i promise it will get better we have a min pin and we had him for about 3yrs b4 we got our other puppy and this where alittle rocky the 1st week or 2. everything is better , and now they are like best buds

I just posted almost the same post on LIF about getting another dog. I too didnt want my Bella's personality to change and for her to feel depressed about having a new dog in the house, but everyone pretty much said that they will adjust! I think 2 dogs are good, like someone else said- they can have company for each other when there's noone home! GL!

GIRLS!!! I just remembered there's a YAHOO!Group that is SOOOOOOO helpful with new puppies, and you'll get PLENTY of advice there -- its ALL positive training techniques, and many of the members are in multi-doggy households.
Yahoo Groups are blocked for me at work, but go to yahoo.com, choose groups, and search for 'Start Puppy Training' You can read their advice files, and post ANY quesitons you have, they are SUCCCCHHHHH a knowledgeable support group!!!

Milana the new puppy is so cute.
If you guys just moved into the house don't forget that Bella is adjusting to that too so it lots of new things for her to get used to.
Also try giving louie a bath with Bella's shampoo --sounds weird but it will help to have him smell a little more familiar.

i wonder if that will help fix things when you do move in ...
cause where you are living now is bella's house, her territory.
the new house doesn't 'belong' to either of them .... kwim?

Yea that might work to our advantage! Were moving in this weekend so well see how that goes.
