Lent- what are you giving up?

Original post by Kimbalina

I saw a thread like this on LIF and was thinking about what will I be giving up. So my question to you all is-

What are you giving up?
Or
What are you doing more of?
Or
What changes are you making?

LIW, that's a good one! Hmm, do you think anyone here could do it?

What would we do during work?

The day of the inauguration when corporate said they were closely monitoring the internet usage, I tried to stay off. I made it through the morning...I thought I was going to lose my mind just sitting here in between working.

Well i give up meat on fridays.... but i an trying to think of whatelse i can give up...i always say cursing, but that never works out

Yeah, I've tried the cursing thing a couple of times...never lasts! My friend and I would go to St. Pat's for ashes and during the walk back to the office I would always end up slipping!

Re: Lent- what are you giving up?

I say it every year and I will try again this year...

instead of giving something up I am just trying to be a better person. Start going to mass regularly, be a little more patient, a little less anal (not sure if that is possible).

In the past the only thing I have been successful in giving up is diet coke and doritos -- it didn't do much in ways of changing me for the better so to me giving up something like that just doesn't make sense.

I like the idea of doing something to change for the better. It is a good thing!

No Meat!!!

For Catholics today is a day of abstinence and fasting. So no meat, no snacks, no sweets.

One 'substantial' meal and two small meals allowed - no snacking in between meals.

I am trying my best to fast until dinner tonight, and also on good friday. I do allow liquids, otherwise I would pass out. No meat on fridays.

Giving Up- Gossiping

Adding More Of- Signing DH & I up for some charity work, like habitat for humanity. Also trying to focus on being a calmer person, and not letting the little things get to me.

I grew up in Jersey and the churches there dont do this, so I dont either. I also dont know that I could, I am anemic and would probably pass out if I went without food.

All Roman Catholic Churches follow the same doctrine - it is just a personal choice if you choose to also!

Tilde is right, maybe its because your parents never had you fast. I don't remember fasting as I would now, but I remember learning about it and seeing others around me do it and I went to Catholic school in NJ for several years.

Although I am not Catholic, I am Christian and technically don't have to give anything up I am.
My boss and I are fasting today for Ash Wednsday (liquid only)
I am giving up cursing for lent.
I am also giving up fast food (unless its a salad)
I will make a huge effort to go to church on Sundays.

I am still eating meat on Fridays though.(except for Good Friday of course)

DH didn't even realize it was Ash Wednesday! I text him to remind him not to eat meat and get his ashes. So he calls me to say he didn't know it was Ash Wednesday and already had turkey on his egg sandwich. I told him he ruined it now

Cursing for lent is a good idea.. I have become a bit of a foul mouth lately.

Re: Lent- what are you giving up?

To address Catholic vs other denoms and also about what its for and explain it doesn't have to be full abstaining. This is my understanding based on studying the Bible and church teaching...hope it helps a little.

The Bible talks about fasting as being important and applies to everyone. It isn't required (for salvation for example) but even if you're not Catholic, it can be a good thing to fast (verses you could look to are when Jesus fasted for 40 days- Matthew 4:1-4, how Christ said there are demons that can only be driven out by prayer and fasting- Matthew 17:21, fasting being appropriate during times of distress/grief/mourning- Mark 2:18-20, other good verses- Matthew 6:16-18, 1 Corinthians 10:31) so if you felt moved to do it, try it. (I grew up in Catholic church, I go to a Christian nondenom church now. Thinking I may still do partial fasting in some way). Fasting doesn't always mean complete abstinence. It can be no food and only liquids, total abstinence/no food and no liquids, or partial (like giving up one/some thing for an extended period of time or eating smaller quantities). It is a sign of obedience to the Lord, a way to praise God, a sign of faith, to break bad habits/patterns, a time to draw nearer to God in prayer and fasting and deeper in faith. I think its great to know why you're doing it and to do it for the right reasons if that makes sense. GL w/ your fasting everyone. God bless!

ETA: as far as biblical origin of no meat on friday, i don't think you'll find that in the Bible. It is just Catholic tradition.
