Lent- what are you giving up?

Original post by Kimbalina

I saw a thread like this on LIF and was thinking about what will I be giving up. So my question to you all is-

What are you giving up?
Or
What are you doing more of?
Or
What changes are you making?

I am christian but I still don't know the story about why we are not supposed to eat meat on Fridays and why we have to give something up for lent. I used to do it when I was younger but now I won't do something just for the sake of doing it. If I understand the reason behind it and I agree with it I will do it but I still don't know the story why.

Does this make sense?

That is for Catholics. I'm Lutheran.

I am Lutheran also

Lent comes from the story of Jesus. Before he was crucified he spent 40 days and 40 nights in the desert - fasting and praying to God. It is a time for us to cleanse our bodies and spirits in order to prepare ourselves for the coming of Jesus during the Easter season.
wiki:

Lent, in some Christian denominations, is the forty-day-long liturgical season of fasting and prayer before Easter.[1] The forty days represent the time Jesus spent in the desert, where according to the Bible he endured temptation by *****.[2] Different churches calculate the forty days differently.

The purpose of Lent is the preparation of the believer—through prayer, penitence, almsgiving and self-denial—for the annual commemoration during Holy Week of the Death and Resurrection of Jesus, which recalls the events linked to the Passion of Christ and culminates in Easter, the celebration of the Resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Thanks for the info. Very interesting! I still don't understand why we can't eat meat on Fridays. Any idea?

In the Catholic faith you werent allowed to eat meat on ANY Friday, which I still follow. People say it is because Jesus was crucified on a Friday so we should not eat any flesh on that day. However, it also started bc people were poor and cutting out meat on one or two days was ust economical.

Now, I feel like it is a little reminder of my faith - a small way I can remember my faith in the course of my regular week.

For many years, I have completely given up meat during lent, not just on Friday. I think I will do it again this year. I would also like to start going to weekly mass again. I haven't gone for a long time. I used to go every week for a long time, and like Kim said, it used to help me feel better about things.

Tilde, do you and your family have meat on Wednesdays? I don't remember if it was just for fasting on Ash Wednesday, but growing up I remember giving up meat on Wednesday too. When I got older, I remember my mother saying I didn't have to give it up on Wednesday too during Lent...most people only give it up on Friday.

Wow I never knew that. See for me I don't believe in doing something if you dont even know why you are or aren't doing it. I feel like so many people tell me not to eat meat on Friday during lent and when I ask them why they don't eat it most people don't even understand why. They just go with the 'rule.' I am glad to finally be able to get an answer from somebody

My parents still do but that was something they never 'made' us do so I never picked up on it. I don't eat meat for Ash Wednesday and for Holy Wednesday but other than that I do.

It used to be more widespread and I think some of the Orthodox Churches still do it.

I have done it since I've been with him. I'm trying to remember if I did it last year though. He has always thought I was crazy...he could never give up his meat. It's hard enough for us with meals as late as I get home, so that's why I'll see this year.

All right, I was starting to wonder if I made it up in my head. We must have at some point, because I remember that growing up. When I haven't given up meat completely, I usually do the Wednesday too. Maybe I will do that this year.
