Lent- what are you giving up?

Lent- what are you giving up?

I saw a thread like this on LIF and was thinking about what will I be giving up. So my question to you all is-

What are you giving up?
Or
What are you doing more of?
Or
What changes are you making?

Re: Lent- what are you giving up?

I currently go to church every Sunday but I will definitely go EVERY Sunday during Lent. No meat on Fridays but I never eat meat on Fridays LOL My church gave out these 'little black books' with a scripture reading for every day of Lent so I hope to take the time to read that and pray for a few minutes every single day. I would like to say the rosary with a special intention once a week. I would just like to become a better, more devout and ultimately happier person over the next 40 days!

I have not been to church that often since a year or 2 ago. I just had a million excuses why I couldn't go But when I do go I leave feeling good..
So I am going to make it my goal to go to church more often, and make a commitment to do it.

I have tried in the past to do no meat on fridays and it just has not worked out for me.. so I am going to try and re-commit to that also.

I live up in Westchester now, so I want to make a substantial effort to find a local community Church to join.

I'm going to try and give up cursing and processed foods.

If you give up meat for fridays- do you just give up beef, pork, veal, and chicken? Do you eat Fish?

I've been terrible about mass- the last time I went was my wedding , so instead of giving anything up, I am going to attend mass. I also dont eat meat on fridays during lent.

i have a friend that gives up coffee (she usually drinks about 4 cups a day)- i really admire people who give something like that up

Re: Lent- what are you giving up?

I am a church goer...however since I moved out of my parents house I have not been to Church. I used to go every Sunday with them...so it's been about a month since I went and I feel guilty...and my mom has def made me feel guilty haha. So I am going on Sunday with my parents since DH doesn't go...he is totally opposite of me on religion.

I will also like to give up my way of wanting everything my way (I am very stubborn with DH). So I am working harder to realize he has to like things and get things his way sometimes as well.

Oh and I don't eat Meat on Fridays during Lent.

I am christian but I still don't know the story about why we are not supposed to eat meat on Fridays and why we have to give something up for lent. I used to do it when I was younger but now I won't do something just for the sake of doing it. If I understand the reason behind it and I agree with it I will do it but I still don't know the story why.

Does this make sense?

Re: Lent- what are you giving up?

Lent comes from the story of Jesus. Before he was crucified he spent 40 days and 40 nights in the desert - fasting and praying to God. It is a time for us to cleanse our bodies and spirits in order to prepare ourselves for the coming of Jesus during the Easter season.
wiki:

Lent, in some Christian denominations, is the forty-day-long liturgical season of fasting and prayer before Easter.[1] The forty days represent the time Jesus spent in the desert, where according to the Bible he endured temptation by *****.[2] Different churches calculate the forty days differently.

The purpose of Lent is the preparation of the believer—through prayer, penitence, almsgiving and self-denial—for the annual commemoration during Holy Week of the Death and Resurrection of Jesus, which recalls the events linked to the Passion of Christ and culminates in Easter, the celebration of the Resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Nothing! I'm Lutheran and we don't have to do anything!

Thanks for the info. Very interesting! I still don't understand why we can't eat meat on Fridays. Any idea?
