Marie Claire Article on Freegans

Did anyone else read this?

Article on Freegans

I've read lots of crazy things in magazines over the year, but I've never heard of this. We can't stop talking about it at work.

I've heard of this before - it's totally disgusting. Who would eat out of the garbage if they didn't have to?? Not only is it unsanitary but it's unsafe!

She took used toys off the street, in garbage for her kids? She must have seen Knocked Up when Seth Rogan said he saw a crib in the alley and it would be perfectly fine once rubbed down with Purell

They....'uncovered a hoard of unopened Chinese food inside a streetside trash can, still warm in its gleaming white containers. They took it to a friend's house for an impromptu dinner party.'

In NYC? Seriously? Disgusting!!!!

Crashing SORRY! but the worst part of the article was the fact that she makes her own reusable sanitary napkins out of cloth. EWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW!

Re: Marie Claire Article on Freegans

a few of my 'crusty' friends were into that. also my coworkers sister did that before having a child because she was into eco-terrorism. I have to say its hardcore and yes we do throw away WAY too much perfectly fine produce. The problem is they can't discount milk/eggs/food product of anytime once expired and i think its a shame. Food typically is not bad when it states its just a healthy guideline. For milk and eggs its more of what temps was it kept at and was it in sunlight for it to really go bad quickly otherwise we have milk over a week over exp dates before it is bad.

I would never go into a dumpster for food though unless I was living on the streets. I do take a peek on garbage night for non-fabric items like lamps, tables, etc that i can possibly sell, refurnish or use. Nothing wrong with that in my mind. But to grab stuff out of a huge can of bacteria is just scary to me!
