I don't think it is for everyone, but when I added up the calories that are consumed they actually wound up at around 1500 for the day. This is slightly more than I consume on a regular day following a plan like weight watchers.

For DH and I it was that we felt we needed that 'shock'. I fast on Yom Kippur and the hardest part for me was the caffeine. Sometimes to the point where I would get nauseous and physically sick. To rid myself of that as well as not crave sugar, and breads I felt that I needed to do something slightly drastic like that. There were a lot of other benefits we felt as well like clarity of thought, etc.

I just wanted to clarify about the calories because I was pretty surprised when I added them up. I live in perpetual fear of slowing my metabolism so risking starvation is not something that I would do.

The caffeine is going to be the kicker for me. I ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS drink a few cups of coffee in the morning during the week. Funny thing is I dont normally drink on the wknds and I have never noticed headaches etc etc... but I dont know how I'm going to handle starting my morning the office without my coffee...

I could fail at this... who knows. I just know I need to CHANGE

Re: master cleanse diet

I just wanted to say that I support what you are doing and I wish you luck. Although I have never done the cleansing that you are doing, Tricia and I cleanse twice a year as part of a program recommended to us by our nutritionist.

We use a supplemental powder that we make shakes with, along with fruit. We also take natural vitamins while on it to be sure we are getting all of the proper nutrition. From there we can have an unlimited amount of raw vegetables and fruit with a few exclusions.

We do this for 21 days and it rides your body of anything unhealty while still giving your body the nurishment it needs.

Like I said...we do it twice a year and we have done it for the last three years.

I hope that your cleansing goes well! Good luck!

UGH always the DH's lol I will say this though-from people i know who have done it, men for some reason tend to do better with it. not sure why but my best friend did it with her DH-he did ok but she ended up hospitalized. Same with another set of friends.

If you're determined, then go for it. Thats your decision, but still feel its a bit extreme. Just do as you plan and listen to your body-dont try to keep up with him. If he's gung ho, thats all well and good but you need to take care of you.

On a side note, I am all for cleansing in te sense of teas and herbal remedies if doen as part of a healthy diet-grandmother was big on those but voluntary starvation.... Been there, done that, NO more. That diet was called Anorexia and unfortunately I guess, this type of cleanse reminds me too much of that I remember what a shock the nutrionist said even a few days without eating is to your system-one of the reasons I believe this is eh....

-chuckles- Of course ya feel great after! You have NOTHING in there! -grins- maybe you should just tell DH to join you for some exlax choxolate time --chuckles- tastes better and you'll get everything out!

But joking aside, just be careful about it. Good luck again.

There is organic maple syrup involved and if you read dgirl's comment above yours there are enough calories ingested. The lemon curb the hunger pains (to an extent) I could NEVER do a water fast or simply not ingest ANYTHING.

DH smokes pot almost every night before he goes to bed... It helps him sleep. I smoke with him occasionally but I don't need it nor do I like it as a normal part of my routine. We both agree it needs to end. =))

Yes I understand but thats one of the things about this diet that doesn't seem to jive; you're trying to cleanse but you're injesting maple syrup=pure sugar. Yes its organic but organic does not mean calorie free nor sugar free and one of the quickest ways to cut your letharic feelingss is to cut sugar and caffeine out of your diet as much as you can, as any nutrionist can tell you.

i guess my feeling on it is if you're still ingesting 1500 calories, most of them sugary, how is that healthy?

Yea thats what i was talking about-this kind of stuff I do. You're working with your body not punishing it.

all food (solid or liquid) is eventually broken down into some form of sugar. The more work your body has to do to get to that point, the more waste products/toxins it sends into the bloodstream. so this detox is meant to provide what you need in the simplest form, which is in so many words, sugar.

But sugar is one of the main energy sources. The more work your bodies does, technically the more calories you burn. The sucrose will supply you with you basic energy needs for the day.

Maple Syrup contains significant amounts of potassium (35 mg/tbsp), calcium (21 mg/tbsp), small amounts of iron and phosphorus, and trace amounts of B-vitamins. Its sodium content is a low 2 mg/tbsp.

I hear you on this. Unfortuantely I don't have the book or any of the explanations in front of me, but the syrup you are supposed to take is organic grade b or c which is supposed to have certain minerals rather than just being an empty sugar. Overall though, as you said, it is important to listen to yourself and know what is working for you.

We had very positive results and a great feeling from doing this cleanse. Years later, I can say as a whole I do eat healthier still. For my husband and I it was what we needed to make a change and push that reset button together.

why cant people just slowly and safely shift their diet...as you phase out caffeine and refined sugars, integrate more nutritious foods. i don't get it.

I'm not doing it to lose weight. I am in GREAT shape. I'm doing it to cleanse my body of toxins... it creates a form of clarity and balance. Its more of a spiritual thing...So I don't expect anyone to understand but those who have done it.

I can't slowly shift my diet. I don't have the discipline for that. I need to start fresh and clean.

different strokes for different folks dear...

i wasnt implying that you would be making that type of diet shift for weight purposes...just for healthier lifestyle like you sounded like you were looking for.

but like you said, different strokes. pls dont misunderstand, i wasnt trying to offend, it just sounds unsafe and unhealthy. and i was concerned about that part but you sound educated abouit the decision.

GL!

Yikes... This is a gross overgeneralization of what happens in our bodies and about 'sugars' (that's right, there's more than one type) in general.

ETA - Our bodies are quite efficient machines. We're MEANT to produce waste and get it out of our bodies naturally. We don't have to go on liquid diet fads to do that. A healthy, balanced diet is all we need...

hi

I'm not going to stir the debate on whether or not this is a good idea.... but I feel compelled to correct some of the inaccuracies in the above statement......

Sure, sugar is the main energy source... required for aerobic respiration in your cells. BUT, it is hardly the only nutrient your body needs. The vast majority of nutrients a body falls into 2 categories: basic building blocks for cellular repair and growth and nutrients that your body cannot synthesize on its own that are required for various biochemical processes. Growth and repair, and other biochemical processes are occurring coninuously, and also need a constant supply of nutrients. Missing many of these vital amino acids, fatty acids, vitamins, and minerals from your diet for any extended period of time will most certainly alter neuronal and immune function, and the absence of any protein for over a week likely will cause your body to harvest protein from all muscles (including your heart) to maintain essential processes.

this diet provides almost none of these nutrients, so in essence, it will put you in a state of moderate to severe malnourishment the longer you are on it. I'm a biochemist, not a dietician, so I don't know how far along that dark road it will take you in 10 days, or if you would reach a state of malnourishment at all within the week and a half period, but please be cautious!
