Minor Accident-

Original post by luvabul

OK.....i was on Hillside Avenue in Queens around 5pm....rush hour, as it is, its so bad driving there for those of you know that know.
There are endless amount of traffic lights, and cars coming from like all direction.

Anyways... i got myself in to a minor accident. My foot slipped and i had a very short distance between my car and the car infront of me a 1990 Altima (beat up) and i hit the car from the back. I did feel it, and no damage was done to my car. but the car infont of me only had a small dent on it i believe, i honestly couldnt even tell because theyre were already so many scratches on the car.

I turned my blinkers on, they got out of the car (furious) and yelled at me we have small children in the car what the hell r u doing etc etc...Theyre was a young husband and wife of SpanisH descent and theyre two kids in the back.

i Said im very sorry...and they looked at theyre car and LEFT..... i was puzzled.... they didnt tell me to pull over no where... so i thought it was over...

i did not have any damage on my car so i did not call the cops ..god knows if i should have ? i just panicked, and was nervous...

Anyways so i lost them in traffic, and after driving i saw them again...they proceeded to honk at me and told me to pull over to the gas station... so i did. At the gas station she showed me her alleged cars damage....and said she wants money. At this point i only had 50$ in my bank account, and i said if she wants she can call the police, She replied 'No this is my sister car, my husband doesnt have a license. (I i dont know if this mean he didnt have it on him, or he doesnt have one period, or if hes illegal).' She said she has two small kids in the car, and her husband can get arrested for not having a license so i said okay...she stated she wanted 300$ for the damages, and i told her ok well work it out, she gave me her house address and name and number. And i only gave her my name and my cell number...

and than they left.

_______________
I dont know what to make of this? Out of all honesty, i felt bad because theyre car did jolt and they had kids in the back......and theyre car had NO RIMS, and dents all over it...it was a green old Altima. She tried to point out some scratch on the back...and i was like are u sure i did this? and the lady wa slike yes yes..u did..

My husbands horrified at my behavior, he thinks i shouldve taken pics etc etc and i was stupid...which i guess i am but im really bad in situations like this. Should i be contacting them first? What can they do, epsecially if her husband did not have a license, and she really did not want to call the police? What if she wants more money, then id like go through insurance....

i have NO witnesses....and i guess neither do they, but theres 2 of them... so god knows i just dont want them to make up some bigger story than the occurrence really was. In addition, no police report was filed

I would NOT call them.
It is obvious that they do not have insurance/license & will get into big trouble. They are stupid for trying to get $$ from you.
If they call, I would tell them that you told the cops on them or something.

I would not give them a Cent.

It was an Accident on your Part.

Exactly! And no one was hurt. Just forget about the whole thing. You did the right thing by stopping and giving your info but now theyre just trying to take advantage.

Ok, deep breath because I'm about to ramble: I agree that you should have called the cops. Although I understand at the moment you must have felt scared and unsure of what to do. But just because you hit them, that doesn't give them the right to decide how the situation should be handled. And it's not your fault or problem that he was driving without a license. He could have just as likely hit someone else or gotten pulled over for speeding. He took the risk of driving without his license and something happened that would require attention from the police. If they chose to drive away, that should have been the end of it. Although you probably should have called the police anyway after they drove off just to report the accident. For them to flag you down later and demand money is not right. How would they even though that the scratch you made would cost $300 to fix? And what are the chances they would use that money to actually fix it anyway based on all the scratches that are on their car already? Any yes, it must have been scary for them because they had kids in the car, but it's not like you chose to hit their car over someone else's! It's called an accident for a reason! You didn't do it on purpose! So even though it's understandable that you feel bad, just remember that accidents happen all the time and the most that that might happen to you is your insurance might go up a little. I think they were scared because even though you hit them, they were actually doing something worse by driving without a license. Sorry to go on and on, but it really pissses me off to hear about people pulling cr@p like this. If I were you I would definitely either change my number or act like they have the wrong #. Do you have any of their contact info? because it might not be too late to report the incident to the police just to make sure they have the true facts. Not to make you more worried, but you never know if they might report it and make up stuff that didn't happen. I feel bad that this happened to you. I hope it works out.

I am sorry this happened to you.

Give them nothing! People are scammers. They have to prove that you caused that damage. People think they should collect a bonanza.

I doubt what you did caused 300.00 in damages. Odds are that because they have no license that they won't pursue it.

Accidents are called accidents for a reason. You didn't intend for it to happen. Screw them!!!

Good Luck!!

change your number.

if he had no license, then he SHOULDN'T have been driving.

Should have called the cops... sorry. I know you were in the wrong, but te cops should always be called with regard to an accident b/c they could ALWAYS change their story with the insurance company.

You just gave them your #? Don't answer the phone or say they have teh wrong #...if they were so adamant about the damage then THEY should have let YOU call the cops.

Or you can offer to have YOUR mechanic lok at the car to assess the damage. I know you feel guilty but you tried to do the right thing & they refused. she can't just TELL You she wants 300.00 she'd have to have the car looked at first.

they probably already had the scratch on the car and figured after they left they could get you to pay for it.

I agree.. They are def. just trying to get money out of you.. Its there own stupidity that there driving around without a license.. They thought they would get money out of you after the fact thats why they pulled you over after the fact..

If he didnt have a license I would have definitely called the cops-no matter what when you rear end someone its always your fault-BUT I think its null and void if that person doesnt have a license. You definitely should have taken pictures but like someone else said-change your number. $300 for a dent is insanity-if you went thru insurance it wouldnt have been that much.

We are sorry to hear about this. Just to be on the safe side I would say change your cell phone number. It definetly sounds like this guy did not have a drivers licence period.

Just remember to call police for any accident no matter how big or little of accident. My darling husband has learned that lesson.

i am not sure of the time limit but you should go to the police station ASAP and report the accident. Also, call your insurance company and report it.

If they reported it and you didnt then they can say that you hit and run - and you will be in BIG trouble, nevermind the money aspect of it

I had to leave the scene of an accident before the cops came but still reported everything. The guy at Geico told me that I was very smart bc if they reported it and i didnt that they could say i left the scene of the accident. . .

People commit insurance fraud all the time and you do not want to get involved with that.
