So last night wasn't the greatest for me. I ended up NOT fulfilling yesterday's QOTD because DH pulled the 'I don''t feel well' routine on me...well, no one told you to go to an all you can eat buffet and have breakfast, lunch, AND dessert, then have more coffee and dessert at home with my parents, and THEN ask me to make dinner at 9:00 at night!!!
If that wasn't bad enough, he gave me his card at 11:02 PM, and actually timestamped it as well as dated it. I was a little annoyed at his general lack of giving a shiz about anything anymore, plus I was riled up and antsy, so I just watched some TV as DH lay next to me moaning that he felt like he was going to throw up.
So then all of a sudden I start hearing this weird beeping noise. It sounded distant, and happened every 30 seconds or so. We got up to check all our appliances and the smoke detector and carbon monoxide detector, and we couldn't find the source. We tested the carbon monoxide detector to make sure it worked, and found that the beep it made was identical to ht ebeep we were hearing. So it dawned on us that what we were hearing was the alarm from our landlords downstairs, who are in FL for the winter right now, so we got in to a panic thinking we were going to die, and that maybe DH felt nauseous not because he was a gavon but because we were slowly getting poisoned! We were about to call the fire department and run to IL's to sleep the night, until we found the manual and realized that it was signifying not an alarm, but either the batteries were dying or that the detector reached the end of its 7 year shelf life. We verified that probability because ours was manufactured in September 03, so just approaching its 7 years as well. So we decided that we were safe, and went back to bed, but we're calling their sons today to come change the battery or get a new one in because it's really annoying to hear it beep every 30 seconds!!!
So longwinded, but that brings me to the QOTD...what's the scariest thing that has happened in the place you live with DH? Or the scariest thing that happened when you lived at home? I actually had a worse carbon monoxide scare at my parents a few years ago when the fire department did have to come because the alarm was legitimately going off, but it turned out to be a false alarm.

Re: Monday QOTD
Hmm... well I don't know if it counts as scary, but I know I panicked bc I had no idea what to do! Our basement has flooded 3 times... one of the times DH wasn't home and I went downstairs to see like 2 inches of water all over the floor! (The main line backed up into the slop sink when I was doing laundry.) FIL ended up coming over to help but I was freaking out and running around with mops and buckets.
Oh and about a month ago I woke up at like 5am and could smell smoke SO strong... I was convinced our house was burning down but I checked everything and didn't see anything. I went back to bed but then heard sirens really close to us so that freaked me out and I thought I missed something and was running up and down the stairs to the basement. It ended up that a house like two blocks away from us was on fire... a man actually died in it.

sheesh!! what a night! that *****!! but i'm glad you're both okay!!
for us, two summers ago, KABOOM!!! lightning hit the pole right outside our house, knocked me into a door (where my lip split open) i ran into the find brian and was so scared i ran into the door frame partially (it's only LOL now in retrospect!) anyway, i ran to him bleeding, he thought i got shot or something, all the lights kept flickering on and off and our tv was frozen with the movie we were watching, and what's even freakier was that it was an action/thriller and this really scary/freaky image of some guys face was frozen on our screen, mid-scream!
anyway, that was pretty frikkin' scary! i was trembling for HOURS! uncontrollably!!!

Re: Monday QOTD
nothing scary like that happend to us in our apt, or even at home! but something scary did happen to us driving!!
I had a rental car, because some a-hole tapped my car and i made a stink about it, and decided to get a rental because it was on his insurance even tho i didnt need one, so DH and I decided to go skii! we took the the rental...
so we were done for the day, and dh and i were going to find a place to get some food! so we are driving and it snowed prob the day before, so the roads over by the mountains were kinda icy...soo we were driving and DH thought this was the right way to go! all of a sudden we are going up a hilly road where there were no cars to be found, and im like UMM i dont think we should keep going this way! well umm we got stuck on a SHEET of ICE on a hill! both sides of us, was a ditch!! so we attempted to turn around and that didnt work, so now we are facing sideways on the road filled with ice!! finally a security guy comes and starts yelling at us and is like that road is closed! umm thank you a little too late!!! turns out the 'road closed sign was knocked down!!'
we called AAA to help us and basically they couldnt get the truck up there to get us down!! so I HAD TO GET INTO THE DRIVERS SIDE while AAA guy and DH pushed the car while i attempted to turn the car and bring it down the hill!!
Scariest day of my life! concidering i was soo close to sliding into a ditch into a rental car, that ionly got cuz i was trying to screw over the a hole who it me!! talk about bad karma!!!!

Ali!! That's so scary! I'm glad everything was OK!
Nothing with DH and I has happened ... but when I was living at home someone broke into our house while my mom and I were asleep and my brother wasn't home. Hands down the most terrifying thing I've ever experienced and nothing I want to go into detail on ... suffice it to say our german shepherd scared him away (even though he was so scared he was actually pissing himself!).

Re: Monday QOTD
Dh and I moved into this apartment back in April. We are on the top floor (17th) of a large elevator building. Well on the 2nd morning in our new apartment, we woke up to the smell of smoke in the apartment. Dh looked out the window and there were fire trucks down on 2nd avenue and then went into our living room and it was filled with smoke. It was absolutely terrifying. I totally thought we were going to die. I ran down the stairs and halfway down met up with firemen. I was shaking and asked them what we should do. They said that the fire was already put out (it was on the 7th floor...10 floors down.) and we were safe to go back into our apartment. I was never so scared in my life. For many weeks after that I couldn't sleep well because I was afraid that our building was on fire. I later learned that our apartments were built in such a matter that if there was a fire, it really wouldn't spread outside the apartment...so we are generally safe...unless the fire breaks out in our own apartment...or maybe the apartment next door.

Re: Monday QOTD
We were in our new house about a week when we heard this strange beep noise. It sounded like DH's phone (like the sound it makes when he gets at text) but it came from our kitchen and his phone was on the nightstand turned off. We looked all over the house and couldn't find the source. We haven't heard it since - so we figure its' ok but it woke us both up from a deep sleep and we couldn't get back to sleep for a while.

Re: Monday QOTD
DH's apartment complex had a terrible fire in December 2006. The top floor was completely destroyed and everything he owned was completely flooded (he was on the ground floor).
The jerk on the top floor emptied the ashes in his fireplace into a cardboard box and left them on the wooden balcony to dry out... they ignited instead.
The neighbor who 'saved him' by coming around pounding on doors telling people to get out came to our wedding. I thanked her profusely for years!

Re: Monday QOTD
Not in our place together, but it was 4 or 5 years ago at my apt in Manhattan. I had broken up with my boyfriend the day before, came home, decided I wanted to take a shower. I got naked and peed in the bathroom but realized I had left my towel in the bedroom (which I NEVER do, but had b/c was distraught over breakup and just sloppy). In bedroom, I see an earring on the floor, pick it up and put in my jewelry box. The jewelry box is EMPTY. I realize I was broken into. I call a friend and she says go downstairs and wait for me, and she calls the cops. The cops come, and the deadbolt is turned in my apt. Ummmm. I didn't lock the door when I left. Long story short, they get in apartment and the window is now open. The burglar had BEEN IN MY APARTMENT WITH ME, AND HID IN THE SHOWER. He wasn't there to hurt me, but thank God I had left my towel in the bedroom, otherwise I would have opened the curtain on him. They knew he was in there b/c his bootprints were all in the shower!

Re: Monday QOTD
Nothing scary happened here because we have only been living here for 3 months but we did have really scary experience at our last apt when we were moving out. Somehow our landlords got into a fight with our ILs which caused me to get into a fight with them and then DH almost punched our landlord out. Then the next day our landlord tried to kick his wife down the stairs (and did make her fall down a few!!) so there was almost a really violent scene because my dh got really pizzed off when that happened...
I am so surprised no one called the cops either time with all the screaming that was going on...

Re: Monday QOTD
When living at home in the city I also had an experience where someone tried to break into my apartment while I was IN IT! That was awful!! He was trying to open the window and when I pulled the curtains back he was standing on my ledge!!!

It was insane. He grabbed his camera but not his cell phone!!!!!! so he had to call me from someone else's phone that night. It was all so crazy. He had just said goodnight to me on IM and was supposed to call in 5 minutes from bed like we always did back then... but then he didn't call. I got worried but never in a million years thought that was going on! But the pictures are amazing! In the aftermath we had so many pieces to pick up. We still have some of the furniture and other things his coworkers gave him after the fire to help rebuild.

OMG so glad you guys are ok. Sorry about the crap vday though!
scariest thing to happen to us was in our new house. DH was taking garbage out and the baby choked on formula and stopped breathing, turned purple. I freaked out hardcore, we brought her to the ER and she was fine. (She was super tiny and her organs are a little immature)
scariest thing to ever happen in my old place (not home but in NY with DH) - we had a racoon get into the old water pipe and come through a cabinet. It literarlly knocked on the cabinet door after eating /destroying the cabinet floor. I locked myself in the bathroom. (its funny now. not so much at the time)

Re: Monday QOTD
The scariest thing that ever happened was when DH & I lived out in Holtsville a few years ago. We were renting a condo w/ a small fenced patio area before the front door. Earlier in the day a young guy in a car w/ dark tints pulled into the parking lot, and asked DH then FH how he liked the area. DH was like it is a nice place to live, everyone knows everyone, and what is going on. He tried to kind of be like don't think your going to get away with anything here ppl are watching. Well apparently it didn't deter the guy. We went to dinner & a movie later that night & didn't get home until around 1am. When we went to open our front door the door knob was almost hanging off the door. There were scratch marks all around where the knob it was like someone tried to pry it open w/ a screw driver or something. DH unlocked the locks, there was also a dead bolt, and bust the door open. Our dog was sitting on the bottom of the steps, and our alarm was still set. It scared the crap out of me b/c when the guy talked to DH earlier in the day he saw what car he had, we had taken DH's car to dinner so the guy assumed no one was home. We don't know what scared him off, maybe one of the neighbors came home, and spooked him, or the dog might have been barking (which he doesn't really do unless he is scared of something). I am just so glad they didn't get in. I don't care about anything they would have taken they could have all our crap I was just worried about our dog. What if they hurt him, or let him run away. It makes me so upset just to think about it. We ended up having to call the police to come, and file a report. DH had a 24 hour locksmith come, and fix/replace the locks. I didn't sleep that night for sure even with the alarm set. The worst part was that DH had to leave the next night for three months to start his police academy in GA! He was driving so his car wouldn't be at our house either. The next night I was so scared to sleep there by myself, thankful they never came back.
Oh & when I was living home someone threw a giant rock (landscaping type that you can put plants in) right threw a window in the downstairs of my parents house. I was at a friends house when it happened but I was scared to go home. The size of the rock if it had hit someone could have really hurt someone. It was crazy.
