Hi all. DH and I have all our money joined....we each get an allowance weekly, but I control the bank accounts and bills and stuff. When it comes to buying presents....I feel like DH should save a little from his allowance and save up to buy me something if he wants to get me a gift. It really irks me that he goes and buys me something (puts it on a credit card, which is paid for from household funds)....then I get the bill and have to pay for it. Although we are not elaborate with gifts...this just happened for our anniversary.
What do you do when it comes to gift giving? Pay for gifts out of household money?

Re: Money...who pays?
DH's birthday was yesterday ... I'm buying him a suit - it's coming out of household money. We give ourselves such teeny allowances per week (at least I think so & so does he) that there is no other way. I'd rather take dip into our money once in a while when we need it then risk spending any more money on a per weekly basis and try to 'save' what little we take. It's better for us at least.

I don't work but I still buy him gifts with 'his/our' money.

We dont have allowances but if we did, we would probably pull it from our joint money, not our allowances. Just like gifts to others would be pulled from there too.

No I don't think you're being sensitive. I would expect the same thing. But then again, DH and I don't join ALL our money. We have a joint account for the household bills and the rest of our paychecks (the majority of our pay) goes into our individual accounts. So, yes - if Dh tried to buy me a gift with the joint money I would definitely be more than a little peeved. It should be coming out of 'HIS' money.

Re: Money...who pays?
I have a different situation b/c I don't work and DH does. But I do control the money/bank accounts/ and bills. So when he spends money on me I know exactly how much, when and where. Honestly it does bother me a little.. I would prefer him to save a little on the side and pay for my gifts with that... b/c then no matter how much I love or wanted the gift I feel guilty knowing it came out of 'household' money that can be used twords bills or other more important things then presents.

Right now we pay out of our own money that we get for 'allowance'.

Re: Money...who pays?
We each have a small weekly allowance as it is now - for food and whatnot during the week. there's not much left over...so gift money comes from the joined accounts....it bothers me sometimes....but then i remember that he picks the gifts out for me.....and he's great at picking out presents for me...so it's all ok again

Money together and we decide on big gifts, whether it's ok for our money situation at that time. For little gifts, he will just go use the AMEX, it's fine with me. We have all of our money combined and it works for us.

Us too. He spends less than me during the week, and I try to stick to an 'allowance.' Since we consider all of the $ our money, we just charge gifts and pay out of the joint checking account.
He spends more on me by far, sometimes I feel badly about it, but he claims he doesn't care.

Re: Money...who pays?
We have a joint account and our seperate money, when it comes to gift giving to each other, we use our own money. Not the joint account. I with you Luvsun, I would have been upset!

Would you rather he got you nothing or something not as good as you got because he didn't have enough allowance money. Be careful what you wish for.
