Need Help...name change question

Hi Ladies,

Question I can't seem to get answered anywhere else.....

to get your name changed on your SS card do you actually have to go to a SS office or can you do it by mail?

I have the form and eveyrthing but i'm just not sure...

I haven't changed my SS card yet, but I'm pretty sure you have to go the office.

My understanding is that you have to go in person because you have to show them your original marriage certificate.

You can do it by mail, or in person.

IF you decide to do it by mail, you would need to mail in your ORIGINAL marraige certificate, and Your ORIGINAL piece of gov't issued ID (license, passport, etc.)

I did not mail it in bc I didnt want to mail in my originals .. but they promise to mail it back with your new SS card.

HTH!

it's not too bad -- about an hour or less -- but if you go first thing I've heard only like 15 minutes. you can dowload all the forms to be filled out online so when you walk in the office your all set.

my SS card only took 1 week to get in the mail after I went to the office to fill out the paperwork

u can do everything through the mail...but u have to send them all your ORIGINAL documents..which is exactly why i opted out. I did NOT wanna send my birth certificate & marraige certificate in the mail! The SS offices really arent that bad..if u go at an off time u don't have to wait that long, and the process is real quick.
