I need opinions here ladies ..My first reaction to what I am going to type is to be annoyed...BUT I am trying to keep an open mind.
SO here it is...
I got my VDay present fromm DH and it was a total surprise-something I was NOT expecting at all. And althought its a beautiful gift I am kinda upset by it...I
It's a watch. A Citizen watch with a diamond chip studded face-very elegant, BEAUTIFUL and likely very expensive and the style even mimicksthe stones in my engagement ring which he pointed out to me, so proud of himself.
I hugged and kissed him and thanked him profusely because it is a lovely gift. BUT..yes here is the but...
But ....I am kinds pissed because I NEVER wear watches and he KNOWS this...I have owned 6 watches in the the 5 years- I have known him, none of which I wore long; Two were not inexpensive and the rest were cheapy watches that i actually liked-you know those bangle kinds you can buy for 5 bucks on the streets of NYC.
But...I am just not a watch girl. DH s always saying I need to keep better time and honestly...I am not one of those people who is always late but sometimes yes, I run on my own time. NOT because I dont know the time (I use my cell) but because sh*t just happens and I roll with it. So I kinda feel like he's making a statemen with this gift...
Again, it IS GORGEOUS. I need to take a pic- but its not 'me.' And he usually is sooo good at picking out 'me' gifts' but I am fun and funky and this watch is very upscale suburban mom as far as I am concerned, but I tried hinting I might want to change it and he got REALLY upset saying he specifically picked out this one because he didn't like the others... He said if I REALLY wanted a diff one we would go...of course that made me feel like a heel so I assured him that its fine, gorgeous, perfect, etc.
-sighs- I am also sensitive I think because a few VDays ago he bought me a palm pilot...I used it for a year-now it sits there. Again it was to 'organize me.' But I always forgot I owned the thing so rarely used it. I am a post-it in the wallet kinda girl-write it down and throww em out as I go along.
I know I am being a little hyper sensitive-getting my period next week so I am aware of that...But would you be a little irked too? Like feel he is trying to change you after FIVE years of knowing EXACTLY how you are?
I don't know--I am being stupid I am sure. What do you girls think?

I posted this on the other thread, but I will add it here:
Awww, don't feel bad Jenn .... guys just, well, they look at things differently than we do. They want to 'fix' a 'problem' ... even if it isn't really a problem. He just wants to help. To me, these are classic examples of 'problem solving' types of presents ...

I'm not a watch person either..
I can see where you are coming from... but I honestly don't think he meant anything by it.
I don't know.. I think you're being too sensitive, but I can understand the feeling b/c I've overreacted to silly things too...
my husband just gives me gift cards... and while they RULE as a gift, I sometimes wish he would spend more time on gifts like *I* do....
but he's just not like that... and its ok...

OK as the wife of an unorganized man, I have to say that yes, maybe this is his way of hinting, even if it is on a subconcious level. I asked DH to put a notebook in his pocket, he is laways forgetting important things. And that causes arguments, so we talked about what he could do to remember these things and the notebook is what we have worked out so far.
I never, ever wear a watch, but I have a nice one from my HS grd I have been wearing lately. I knda need one these days, so it worked out.
I guess if it were me, I would keep it and maybe wear it on the weekends or special occassions. It was very thoughtful for him to get it to match your ring tho!

Re: Need opionions on this..please
While I think it was awefully nice of him to get you a beautiful, diamond watch that matches your e-ring, I do understand why you feel disappointed. The thing is - I wonder if maybe he felt like if he got you a super nice watch that matches your e-ring that you would like it enough and actually wear it. Like for example, DH doesn't wear jewelry, but as a wedding gift I bought him a very nice (manly!) bracelet and had the back engraved. He loved it and he wears it whenever we go out. So maybe Pete thought you'd like the watch as a special occassion item to wear out to dinner, a party, holidays, etc. Maybe he thought you could wear it to work since you dress business-like. And maybe part of it WAS that he would like you to be more punctual. That isn't necessarily a bad thing. I'm sure there are little aspects of Pete's personality that you wouldn't mind changing a bit and if you could encourage him to make those positive changes and also get him a really nice gift, then you might consider doing that (maybe not, but maybe so).
So I DO feel you - it's like you're with this person for 5 years, you married him, and you'd hope he knew you well enough to know what you don't like. But it's still a nice gift. Do you think you might like it enough to wear it for special occassions at least?

To be honest, I would return it... he spent a lot of money on it and if you aren't going to use it, then he will understand...
LY my DH got me a LV Bag and I didn't like the one he got me, and although it broke my heart telling him that I was going to return it... I did it b/c I know he spent a lot of money on it and it would be a shame to keep something that expensive and not use it.
I am sure he will understand...

Toughie.
While I never wear a watch, I just cant it annoys me-I would keep it b/c DH picked it out to match and probably did spend some time looking for it to match thinking you would wear it.
BUT on the other side...if you arent going to wear it its a waste-so in my mind it would be return it and get something you WILL use...
I dont know Im not help

Re: Need opionions on this..please
Alrighty Jenn.. i am being 200% honest with you - i actually read ur post twice...In all honesty i really do NOT think he was trying to say ANYTHING statement like with ur gift. Of course u know Pete better than i do, but I really just think he was trying to get you something different & nice that he knows u don't have or need. I actually think the watch is beautiful! Now if it's the style u don't like, then I'd be honest & exchange it or return it(but don't argue over it! talk to him & tell him u really do appreciate the gesture & u dont want him to be hurt if u know he's super sensitive about these kind of things)...ANYWAYS, so if u really aren't happy with it, and u know it cost him a nice chunk of change, then i'd tell him that...BUT i in no way think he was trying to make a point in getting you the gift. I really think he was just trying to get you something nice that u dont have(which u dont) and do something a little different. Who knows, maybe u'll wear it(or wear the new one u pick out ) and start loving watches I'm sorry u're a little dissapointed, but honestly i really think he was just trying to get u something nice...like u said - maybe u're a little sensitive over the issue 'cause of the palm pilot 'this is to organize u' thing & the fact that he's always telling you u're late lol....but i DONT think that was his reasoning for this.. If u flat out dont like it then that's one thing, but don't read to much into it! Guys will be guys..and sometimes when they try extra hard it messes things up even more! Atleast there was the thought of wanting to get u a beautiful gift
