Newlyweds not changing their name yet?

Newlyweds not changing their name yet?

How many of you are changing their name someday but not right away? Why? How does DH feel about that?

I am not changing it legally yet because my NY State Certification and transcripts are in Angelo and if I change it schools will know I am newly married. I am told that is bad, that schools don't want to hire newly married candidates because they assume they will take maternity soon.

But its so weird and bothering me a little because I know I am going to take his name and now I wonder when will be a good time.

i haven't taken DH's name and it's almost been a year! I always figured i would take it, i want to, but when it comes down to it I don't want to lose my name and at the same time it's a pain in the you know what! Besides the drivers license, SS card, credit cards, banks, etc, I also have professional licenses, etc!

DH wants me to change it, but he knows i haven't changed it yet and really hasn't bothered me too much about it. He knows i will do it when i feel it's time. We probably aren't having kids for another 2 years, so I told him at this point I'll just wait until we have kids to change it!

I haven't changed mine yet but I hope to early next year. We are trying to purchase a coop and between signing contracts, mortgage applications, etc I just didn't want to make it any more complicated than it already is. Dh doesn't seem to mind too much because he understand that there is a reason for me not changing it right away and that I will do it soon.

I was worried about all these things too since I'm a licensed attorney, but I added his last name to mine and find that it hasn't been a problem at all yet. On my professional licenses, I'm still my maiden name, but I'll get them changed soon. I think it really depends on what works for you. I just knew I wasn't going to want to go to court later on to change it so I compromised by keeping both.

I haven’t changed it yet… but that’s just bc I’m lazy and don’t want to waste a day off work going to the DMV/SS/etc…

Is it harder to change it if you wait a year or two? I thought it was the same process.

Its on my marriage license that I am changing it, because I do plan to at some point, does that mean i have to?

I changed my ss card and license right away since I had the time off of work to go. But as a teacher, if you try to change it later it may be hard to make the switch (especially if you teach high school). Out of my 200 students, about 120 already know me with my former name and I didn't see an easy way to get them to change without completely sidetracking the first day of school! I think if you have the opportunity to use the name you eventually want right from the start, why not do it. I'd like to hope any district worth working for won't pass you up for that reason!

I haven't changed mine yet, b/c I love my last name and he doesn't want me to hyphenate it. He gets bother by it, I will do it soon.

Thanks but all my teachers in grad school told me to ABSOLUTELY not let schools know I was newly married. Everyone I know high up in education seems to agree. Its sad but true. Also my parents have a lot of contacts in the education world that would know the name Angelo, but Barbely is only known in NJ... that does me no good.

I'm waiting until after our honeymoon since we booked flights and everything under my maiden name. I can't wait to change it though!!

I changed my name the day after we got back from our honeymoon.... I was still on Summer vacation so I had time to go. I currently work at a school and need to apply for my professional certificate, so I'll have my new last name on there. I already have my new last name change in their system because I sent in my marriage certificate to TEACH ONLINE..... I have changed my name on everything- but my insurance b/c for some reason that didnt change automatically through NYC human resources dept- I have to call them soon... but I am still covered.

I did half! DH and I just bought a house so I couldn't change my address yet so it was a set back with DMV but I have slowly changed everything. One thing I changed right away was my SS. I just did my license last week so I should be getting that soon!

I haven't change my name either....and I keep forgetting I have a new name. Both DH and I bought homes before we met each other, so I was advised to not change my name until next year because of it. At work, I added his name to mine for professional purposes.
As for DH, he'd prefer me to take his name.

Re: Newlyweds not changing their name yet?

I have not taken DH's name. It's been over a year. I honestly find it quite a hassle to take time off to get my social security, passports, bank accounts as well as legal documents changed. It's going to take time adapting to the new name. I think in due time, I will eventually but I gotten so used to signing and writing my last name, lol.
