Newlyweds: What was the one BEST thing about your shower?

Im throwing a friends shower next year. Its quite a whiles away so I dont have theme or solid ideas on what im going to do. But you guys who know me - I want to do it up right. So I thought I would go to you lovely ladies who probably have tons of great ideas I can borrow (ok, outright steal ) and build the party around the ones that she might like.

So I was wondering if you could share the ONE OR TWO most fabulous things about your shower?

(Obviously having people who love you all there to celebrate is #1 but Im looking for things that are under my control. Like the theme or the decor or a special gift or a unique way to remember the day or whatever)

One friend of mine made a cross stitch of my name and my husband's name and the wedding date with two hearts in a frame. I really liked that. My mom put our wedding invitation in a shadow box with lace from my wedding bolero she had made for me and the ribbons used for my shower.

I had really hoped that the invitations would include recipe cards, so that my guests could give me a copy of their favorite recipe.

The best gift was a scrapbook my mom made of Scott and I dating up to the shower (it had the invite, etc in there)

Recipes from everyone I loved . A beautiful wedding cake made out of Towels and soaps. My maid of honor made me a Wedding Video cover that had our wedding invitation on it and made kiss and ring bells with a poem on it for me to use for the wedding. (was that to many things I liked )

My husband made little books telling the story of 'us' with pictures documenting our years together. There was one at each seat for all the guests. DH was really the one who made my shower so special.

my friends that planned it are extremely organized, here are the things from the planning standpoint that I remember as being great. I got a lot of sentimental gifts but I don't think that's what you're looking for.
They were really thorough with keeping my list of gifts which I appreciated for obvious reasons.
One of my friends made beautiful thank you cards for me that matched my theme, and another friend printed out all the addresses on the envelopes-it made it really easy for me to get them out quickly(my wedding was only 3 weeks later)
Another one of my friends organized all the games & they gave out great prizes that went with my theme.
They did such a great job of keeping with the theme(which I loved & always wanted).

It was a Victorian Tea Party, the thank you cards were handmade & inside on the top flap they had a tea bag & a poem-don't remember it now & then I wrote them out in the normal spot-they were a hit.

My bm's also gave me pre addressed and stamped thank you's- It was so great, I had them done in a week.

They also did the multiple choice game about dh and I- it was very sweet.

My invitations were very personalized, made by my two best friends. They took the picture of DH proposing to me, blew it up to about 5x7 and printed an invitation poem on vellum and used it as an overlay to the picture. It was gorgeous!

Also, my favors. They were so adorable, and a total hit. They were cute little colorful coffee mugs with different faces on them. One was drunk looking, another tired looking, one happy...and they were wrapped with a spoonful of hershey kisses in them, as well as a tea bag that said 'Love Is Brewing' and our names and dates. Really really cute, people were clamouring for them..I got all 6 variations of the mug as part of a gift.

can I tell you what not to do? b/c my shower was a disaster...something i try to forget...

do not:
-forget to include (AND INVITE) all bridesmaids
-cop an attitude at the bride when she is upset her bestfriend since 7th grade was not invited
-decorate with white streamers and wedding bells if that is not her style...

Mine also asked everyone for a recipe, with a personal note/message at the end of it. She then bought beautiful paper, typed each one up and printed them out and bound it into a book. It's something I will always treasure.

That it was over!- YUCK! Sorry to be the big negative, but when the shower is more about the MIL than the bride- it may not go just right

Oooo, I just thought of something that I would have loved to have had at my shower since we did it for a friend's shower. Everyone made a page (whether they did a layout of scanned pics or simply glued them down) and someone put them together for the rehearsal dinner or it can be done for the shower. (Give plenty of time to the guests if you do this though). Some people wrote little stories of the bride of groom when they were younger, I put pics of the B&G when they first met since we all went to college together. It was such a great memory for them from all of her friends.

first of all - I am super jealous of whoever got YOU to throw their shower.

And clearly you will need few more back-issues from Martha - so let me know what month it is going to be in so I can send them off to you....

My sister loved the fact that we put index cards in each invite and asked for a family recipe from each guest. We gave her a box to put them all in - and it really is such a great thing to have. Everybody's handwriting...it's really sweet. We also got those Victorian charm pulls - you can get them on e-bay, and we made a cake (my older sister did - her favorite kind) and inserted the charms in there, and all her friends pulled them - I don't know if you've ever seen this tradition but it's really nice.

I wish there had been music playing at my shower. Something to think about. I am going to make sure there is some nice background holiday music at my baby shower in December. I think it just takes away from any weird silences.

At my shower I LOVED having cupcakes instead of cake or pie as dessert! They were AMAZING!!

Jenny: I gave her all my Martha Weddings to plan her own wedding! Hopefully i can remember what I read over and over again during my stint as bride. Hahah

Some specific things I need help on:
- Guestbook: She did a poloroid guestbook for me so I dont want to use the same thing if I can avoid it.
- Games: She did bridal bingo so I could do that again but if anyone has any games that were a sucess - please let me know.

I had a really nice shower.

Here are some things I thought were cool:

1. my cousin made the cutest veil for me to wear all day

2. There were pics of DH and I around

3. The invites were personalized and each guest received a different one.

4. There was a marital advice book that was passed around and all the women wrote in it

5. My cousin had my wedding invite matted and framed.

6. There were beautiful floral centerpieces around that were given away at the end of the night

7. All of my favorite foods were there. I love food so that was key for me.

Stef- I am sure you will do such a FABULOUS job for your friend!
For my shower, my sister made me Holiday/Season Baskets filled with decorations for Christmas, Fall/Halloween/Thanksgiving, Fourth of July/Summer, Easter/Spring. They were awesome and so original!

My bridesmaids also played games with the guests like -who has a nail file in their purses? and then the lady who did got a gift - the women went WILD, dumping their purses out to win and it was fun!

Also, my sister had the ladies fill out cards for Advice for the Bride - i.e. How to Keep the Spice in the Marriage; You can't beleive what some of my mom's friends wrote- very fun and definitely spiced up the 'oh what a nice toaster' boredom that can set it at showers!
