Newlyweds: What was the one BEST thing about your shower?

Im throwing a friends shower next year. Its quite a whiles away so I dont have theme or solid ideas on what im going to do. But you guys who know me - I want to do it up right. So I thought I would go to you lovely ladies who probably have tons of great ideas I can borrow (ok, outright steal ) and build the party around the ones that she might like.
So I was wondering if you could share the ONE OR TWO most fabulous things about your shower?
(Obviously having people who love you all there to celebrate is #1 but Im looking for things that are under my control. Like the theme or the decor or a special gift or a unique way to remember the day or whatever)

Here are mine:
1) That is was held at my cousin's beautiful home! I love home showers if possible - so much more personal.
2) It was a tea-party theme. Very cute and original. No games were played (not a fan of those).
3) I received so many wonderfully personal gifts. A honeymoon bag filled with things for our trip to Hawaii, a doorknocker with my new last name on it , a few other things with our new last name, and my favorite, my mom made me a pillow from material from her wedding dress I was floored by that one - so beautiful and sweet

This is a simple one, aside from all the humilitating shower games (okay they were secretly fun), my favorite part of the shower was the cake! It was so delicious and people to this day still refer back to that cake!

Did you ask for pics? Ooooh alright.
My favors and towel cake. One of the waiters asked my mother in law if she 'baked' the beautiful cake, because she had baked trays of cookies, and they thought the towel cake was a REAL cake.

I loved the recipe cards. I needed as much help as I could get.
My sister also made up all of my thank you cards with addresses printed out for me. WHAT A HELP THIS WAS!!!!!!
My friend (BM) also made me a photo book for me to put my pictures in. She put the invite on the front (which had sunflowers on it) and sunflowers all around the border. It was really beautiful and thoughtful.

How could I forget?! My bridal party had a cookbook made for me....with the invites, they sent out nice paper for everyone to write their fave recipe. It was put into a book with the actual request (that was sent out) on the cover for me

don't know how you feel about this game...but at my cousins shower about 6 years ago...they had us get in groups of 3-4 and gave us a roll of toilet paper (you could get white for the bridey look - or maybe the olor to match?) and we had to create a wedding dress on one of the group members...
well I was the model and my mom and aunt are both master sewers...so they were doing things with toilet paper that noone could even imagine...then we had to model them...
well fastforward 6 years to her baby shower and her MIL said to DH...i will never forget when I met Erica with the toilet paper!!!(John was VERY confused) but its nice to have that memory

Stef I loved that it was small - just really close friends and family, that it was a Friday night, and that it felt more like a girls party than a shower

and another thing - the theme was wine & candles - the favor was a candle and everyone was asked to bring a bottle of wine, not a wishing well thing. Everyone was given a small disc to write ont and it was folded over and sealed until we opened the wine!!

I too, had a recipe card box at my shower, which was filled with the recipes from my family and friends who were there. The only thing I didn't like about this was that the guests who could not attend the shower never sent my Mom their recipes, so I still don't have recipes from some people But, I treasure the ones I do have - especially family tradition recipes and recipes from family members that have since passed away.
Other things I loved? I loved that the centerpieces were potted plants for everyone to take home. I loved that the decorations were elegant and not over done and that the room was large enough to be comfortable, but not too big to feel empty.
Here's some ideas for things I have done for other people:
Bride's Tree Christmas Ornament collection - fabulous time of year to put this together NOW, and get it out of the way! You can present the ornaments in a small cedar storage box and personalize the couple's monogram or surname on it.
Bride's Apron/Guest book - you gave me this idea and I've used it with great success at other showers!
Wine Bottle for all occasions - this has been posted a million times on the boards...it's a really cute idea if the bride and groom enjoy wine.
Symbolic Candle basket - this has also been posted quite a bit, but again, another cute idea that doesn't often get used.

Addressed and stamped thank you cards were by far the best shower gift. My friend who hosted the shower put up pictures of my DH an I all around her house. Another friend made a scrapbook/sign in book with memoried of DH and I through the years for everyone to sign. I also loved that the shower had a fall theme- from invites to decor to food- but that is just because I love thigns to be organized.

my MOH made me an incredible scrapbook for my wedding. i was so touched.
another fun idea for the guests
cute favors & centerpieces:
i had such a wonderful time.
they also sent recipes for the guests to bring- they made me a recipe box and organized all of them for me. they also bought me the matching TY cards (matched the invite).

There was so much I loved about my shower..... I wish I could just post pictures. I'll have to scan the ones of the decorations for you to see.
My 'centerpieces' were squares of mirrors w/ the balloon weights holding multi pastel color balloons w/ rose pedals & confetti all over the mirrors. (I'm really not doing them justice) They had kisses wrapped up w/ the ribbons of the date & the favor was a mini picture frame in different color tissue paper.
There was a 'decoration' table w/ the wedding cake made out of towels. My invitation decorated in a shadow box... the 'mini brides' of just the dress... a coach w/ a candle in the middle... it was all really really beautiful! Again- I'm not doing any of this justice.. I'll scan some of the pictures and post later.
All I do know, is this is one lucky girl!!! You're putting in so much effort, it's going to be perfect!

Well, since I'm a Minnie fan, my MOH had made minnie ears for everyone to wear on their heads when I walked in. It was adorable - little black ears with the polka dot bow! They made one for me too!

Wow! I can only pic one? hehe! There were lots of things that I LOVED about my shower. But I guess the one thing that could be considered 'the best' were my invitations. My MOH used a pic of me as a little girl as the invite and it was also a magnet. I have never seen anything like it, my guests still tell me what a fantastic idea it was for a bridal shower invite!

I guess part of my dilemna is that my friend is not into the traditional shower things. Like I cant imagine her having any interest in a towel cake and I dont really think the recipe thing would work for her (but I could be wrong) about that. At the same time, she is not going to want anything too out of the ordinary...so I dont know what to do as a good middle ground.

I was recently invited to a shower I couldn't attend, but the moh sent out scrapbook pages, that the guests were instructed to fill with their memories of her, or pics of them with her, or anything else they thought would be nice for a shower scrapbook. Could be bits of marital advice...anything really. I thought that was pretty cute.

why not have a ladies Tea Party theme. Just serve tea and cookies and thoese little finger sandwiches. You can give each guest a different tea cup and saucer and that will be thier favor to take home.

What I loved about my shower was one of my bridesmaids taped the entire shower and told me it was one of my other BM camera and when I had opened all my gifts, they said wait there's one more and I was like where? They then handed me the camera My BP had gotten me a digital video camera, and I had my entire shower on tape. Also I loved the favors, big huge mums and mini loaves of banana, pumpkin and corn bread. I had a fall theme.

I had so much nice stuff at my shower too. One things that was different was it was at night. My mom really wanted that because she wanted more of a 'social' atmosphere. That was nice and different.
I also had the towel cake, the holiday basket, candle basket, recipes, etc. My mom wrote a lingerie poem and gave me all types of lingerie - from sexy nice stuff, cute casual stuff, regular pj's and then some granny nighties (kind of - but they were still from VS just more to the cover up side!). It was cute.
For sign-in my mom used a rolling pin that was from her shower and modernized it and added ribbons with hearts for the guests to sign in and add wishes.
For my SIL's we kind of did a 'how to' theme. With each gift they asked you to put a how to - to teach them how to start a home. It was cute. Like for bedding, there were directions on how to make a bed, or with flatware - how to set a table. My aunt found a whole list of how to's and highlighted some sections to be read out loud by the bride. The were perfectly normal stuff but with a dirty imagination it was really funny.
Other gift ideas that I have done: wine baskets, stock the medicine cabinet, honeymoon basket, christmas ornaments, kitchen gadget, etc.
Besides Bingo, I have done the spice rack game. Where you remove the labels from spices and pass them around and the person who guesses the most right wins prizes. It was a hit esp since the crowd was pretty much 40+...they didn't have to move around much and it was fun.
