Does anyone know if it is illegal to drive around without a front license plate on your car?
For the past couple of weeks, someone (we have no idea who) is parking their car overnight in front of our house and the car doesn't have a front license plate.
TIA

to be honest, i wouldnt want anyone consistently parking right in front of my house either. an im assuming you are referring to using the plates as a way to get them in trouble and stop parking near your house?

So question is-if they arent getting loud and obnoxious, littering on your lawn, hanging out in the street and not disrupting you at all (excpet that they are parking in the street) what exactly is the issue? AND not having a front plate doesnt get you in trouble, you have 10 days to put the plate on and the ticket goes away. ANd just b/c they put a plate on the front doesnt mean they will stop parking there....
I guess im just not understanding what the big issue is about someone parking in front of your house....Its not the home owners property

Re: NWR - Missing Front License Plate (Nassau)
I pulled out of my driveway this morning and noticed the missing front license plate...and I was just wondering about it. (We live on Long Island).
We think that the car belongs to a tenant (in an illegal apartment) a couple of houses away from us. There are parking in spots in front of that house...so why don't they park the car there? Perhaps because the landlord doesn't want them to park there...doesn't want to call attention to his/her house?
I wasn't asking to start anything...just wondering...

But is the car registered in NY? I live on LI too, have for awhile, we have dual residency therefore I dont have to transfer my plates over to NY, I have SC plates on my car on LI, if the car is not a NY car it may not have to have a front plate. I cant tell you anything about why they wouldnt park in front of their own house, who knows-just saying they can park there-there is no law saying someone cant park in the street 5 blocks away if they wanted to, thats all. Ive been thru the 'illegal apt.' thing with a friend....and it takes ALOT to get them to ever look into the complaint, its almost useless

hmmm that IS strange... and you NEVER see the owner? Do you live near a trainstation?
My parents live within walking distance from the LIRR (its a 5-10 minute walk) and sometimes people try to park on their street to avoid having to pay for a parking permit.

The back plate is a NY plate.
We do not live anywhere near a train station.
My DH looked out the front window a little after 9PM and the car was there (didn't see it earlier).

maybe they are trying to hide it from the repo man.
as long as they aren't doing anything to your property--i wouldn't sweat it

I'm a LI'er.. born and raised.. well not born.. but raised.. and although this will sound incredibly foolish to many.. i TOTALLY understand the whole parking in front of my house thing..
I can't explain it.. but I would feel the same way.. and I actually HAVE called the cops on a car parked in front of my house for a lengthy period of time..and this particular car did have plates on the front and the back.. but I got tired of looking out my window and seeing the ugly car out there.. (please don't flame me.. i'm mostly a lurker here..)
so i called the popo.. and purposefully reported the wrong plates.. The police were out there with the quickness!! (my tax dollars at work) and started peeking at the car.. my neighbor's kid (whom the car belonged to) came out and the cops talked to him and basically told him to move it back in front of his own house or in his own driveway...
my husband didn't understand why I did this either. he's from Queens...He said the car wasn't bothering me and no externally it didn't cause a rash or anything but internally it was eating me up.. I couldn't stand coming home and seeing that car there.. it just irked me so...
you have a house that you can park one car in front of... you have a driveway that fits 3 cars.and you have a garage that fits one car.. so that's a total of 5 cars you can park in front of or on your property.. Which again is a lot of cars for one 3 bedroom home on a 40*100 lot and an approximate square footage of 1100 square feet.. (is it a single family home or a boarding house?)
so yeh..if there is only one NY plate i'd call the cops..tell them its a stolen car with only one plate.. they'll be out pretty quickly..

why just not ask the teenager to move the car politely instead of getting the cops involved?

are you angry that the person is parking in front of you house? Or does it bother you that they don't have a front license plate.
I'm assuming the former... If so... why?
I am pretty sure its an LI thing - I have seen this debated on LIF a lot.
silly LIers... they need to be hardened and bitter like us queens girls... you're lucky to even find a SPOT
Queens here!!! my block isn't soooo bad, I have a school across the street, so if I wasn't working it would totally suck b/c parents are coming through here in the morning and afternoon.........at my old house in S. Ozone Park, it was so bad w/ all the multiple families living on the block, there were a few times people parked and BLOCKED my driveway, my DH asked them to move so we could pull into our driveway, he did, and then put his car right back after we pulled into the driveway!

uh..that' would be because I didn't know it was the kid's car till the cops came to investigate and he came out the house.. he hadn't moved the car in quite some time..

that is totally another story if the car was not removed and parked in front of your house for some time. I would be not happy than either.
I just have learned not to make enemies with Neighbors it just creates for more issues later.

I know the car has been moved, but i really don't think you should tell people to call in a false report

you might feel like 'your getting your tax dollars' but I hope someone else is getting their tax dollars worth when you have a real emergency and thay can't get to you because they are looking up a plate on a car that has been reported stolen, but really belongs to someone on the block

ITA I don't think you should make up false reports - In my prior post I was going where you at Heather - however if she really didn't know who it belonged to that is a totally different story and the car is parked in front for days w/out being removed. That would make me

i know the car might be bothering you or something---but calling in a false report?? thats utterly ridiclious.
i'm sure you think its 'no big deal' cause you needed the eye sore fixed...but i'm sure if you ever need a cop for something like an accident or emergency and they are held up cause of a false report on a silly thing like a car in front of a house....maybe you'll think twice about it when it affects you.
sorry if this is coming off harsh--but my hubby works hard all day long with calls and the last thing he needs is to have to deal with something like that cause someone just wants to have the cops handle something that they could have done themself. (using some due diligence i'm sure you could have found out whos car it was or even left a note asking them nicely to move it)
then people say 'why does it take so long for a cop to come to me when i need them?'
