Offended.....and its OVERUSE

so after reading thru the hot mess that was that crazy thread from last nite----i was thinking...do you guys think the word 'offended' is entirely overused these days, ESPECIALLY on these boards?

like if someone says something like was said on the 08 board a few days ago about how they at things brides go crazy over, now that they are a newlywed. after that there were all these 'i'm offended by what you said.'

i feel like on here and LIF ---people are 'offended' about anything and everything. i mean--its a messsage board of strangers....what are you getting offended about! i just don't understand it...maybe because it takes a LOT to offend me...but when did so many women become such whiny b*tches?

I think I am offended.... LMAO ...you are 100% right !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I don't know if I would say I get offended easily but some posts I can say I find in bad taste or 'offensive.' Like they would make me roll my eyes but I don't get personally distraught over them. Sometimes I just think TACT is something people do need to learn and BEING A GROWNUP is something others have to learn.

In essence-You don't have to be mean just because you can. Politeness makes this world that much more pelasant and if you have nothing nice to say, keep your mouth closed-its back to Kindergartern basics here. Some people DO start threads that just dont need to be started, looking for drama and that is unencessary. Don't be a bully and don't be horrific just because you have the ability to do so.

BUT at the same time, the overly sensitive types , DO need to develop a thick enough skin where you can let 95% of 'offensive' matter roll off your back. Unless its made a personal attack, just roll your eyes and continue along.

I think one of the issues with the 08 brides is the same thing we went through-they are nearing their date and getting stressed so they are channeling their inner Diva. We all did it so i do think they need to be cut some slack, just as the 06ers cut us slack. But 08 girls, everyone is NOT attacking you...y'all just need to take a step nack and reassess and see that.

There are a few select people that get super defensive right away.

I stuck up for someone on Fashion (LIF) the other day. Because she said something about someone she knows IRL wastes has a ton of debt, but still buys high end purses. Someone else got 'offended' right away taking it as 'all people who buy expensive bags don't pay their bills' (or something along those lines)

It happened to me a few weeks ago too, I stated a personal IRL example and someone took it personally. It's ridiculous.

Some people just feel like the world is out to get them and everything is about 'them'

The term offended is so overused it is almost meaningless.

Personally i could only be offended by the words and actions of someone I am really close to.

but see thats the thing---someone being a bully or mean only has that power if you LET it happen. cause if you think about it--no one can be a bully or have power on a random internet message board unless you validate them by giving them the responses they want. i admit i contribute to drama threads sometimes---why? because i find it funny. not because i'm 'offended' by it....because i find it absolutley hilarious that posters will go nuts over something stupid---not like you are gonna change some random poster's opinions.


and the whole brides thing----seriously brides these days need to fuking SIMMMMMMMMER. this issue comes up every year and it'll happen again next year i'm sure. but i honestly think the brides that get 'offended' by newlyweds saying that stressing over the details is silly......are the types that would be offended no matter what and are waaaaaaaaaaaay too focused on the wedding anyway.

lets be real---the divorce rate is alarmingly high these days -- and sometimes when i see brides from any year (07, 08, 09..whatever) -- i see how they stress so much over the details and i think 'someone should buy this one a gift certificate to a divorce attorney for their wedding'. they lose sight of what its all about

to get offended because someone said 'dont' sweat the small stuff and i at you guys stressing' is just so silly. its a wasted emotion. its like they got pisssed cause someone said *GASP!* that the details aren't what is about!!! OMG NOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!

i remember that one. and reality tv IS mindless---hence why its such a guilty pleasure. hell even one of the major production companies that produce most vh1 shows----is called MINDLESS ENTERTAINMENT!

Yea thats my point though. Why do we NEED to add to the drama? or why do we need to post anythign we KNOW is going to be considered rude? Its just starting trouble to start trouble-for the sake of it. Thats what I consider ridiculous-not even offensive but childish and mean spiritied. Perhaps 'offensive' was the wrong word choice for my own points.

I didn't see the thread excpet atiny piece so no clue what went on. All i can reiterate is B2B have sterss going on and online things can be taken out of context because you can't hear tonal voice changes.

I remember that. She was offended bc Tara said reality TV was mindless TV brought to you by the mindless. It was that last part that offended someone. She was offended bc she's a producer for MTV, so she took it personally. I *hope* she was kidding when she said she was offended, if it were me I would've taken it as a joke and laughed at myself.
