I am very lucky because I LOVE my in laws. When my MIL calls she always says 'Hi, it's Mom'

Sounds as if she is mad at her son and wanted him to hear the message more than you.

Wacky, if she's a widow, maybe she is just feeling lonely or forgotten (especially this time of year).

While I hate to admit it (at this early stage) us Mothers of sons can be quite possessive, and maybe she is wishing that Paul would just call, say hello and check in on her a little more than he has done in the past.

I kinda get the feeling you just don't like her, but if you tried to make her feel like she was important to the two of you, she may start to treat you differently. Good luck...my MIL is not super easy to 'read' either, but I'm getting better at it (I think )

WOW, thats SOME message. It sounds to me like she's bitter, lonely and just takes it out on anyone and everyone.
A message like that is disrespectful period

My sisters MIL is also very NOT warm and fuzzy in many ways. I really cant understand why some moms have to be this way with their DIL's. HOW SAD !
Its things like that that make me count my blessing for how warm and fuzzy MIL. She treats me like more than a daughter (and sometimes I take it for granted and get a little annoyed when she calls alot. or asks a million questions, out of good intentions)

Wacky, can you hand her over the 'Wacky' nametag?

I didnt read all the posts here so I dont know if you had a bad relationship with her in the past? But it just sounds like she was NOT greeting you in the message and just leaving a message to strangers (Like an office where her son works or somethinG) and hope her son would get it very very strange.

I obviuosly don't know how she is and maybe she really doesn't mean anything wrong but it does sound to me like she is almost asking you for permission to speak to her son, have you guys ever had any problems before? I hope everything works out ok.
