please help! update

has anyone changed their middle name to their maiden name after marriage. For instance your name is jane ann doe and u married john smith. You want your new name to be jane doe smith. How would I go about doing this? Can i go down to social security or do i need to have this listed on my marriage liscense

UPDATE: I called social security and this is what I was told: You have to have your new name put on your marraige liscense and not just your social security card. I had put my surname as my middle name on the social security application but not on my marriage liscense, so I must now go back in to SS office and have this fixed so that I can get a new drivers liscense. I hope that this helps out anybody else who made this mistake. Thanks for all your help ladies!

I made my middle name, my last name. I previously did not have a middle name so I don't know if that makes a difference...I did it at the SS office. HTH

so you didn't have to write it on your marraige lisence first?

I don't think it matters what you have on your marriage certificate. I have a friend who had her husbands last name on the marriae cert. but never changed her name at SS. It doesn't count until you actually fill out the SS form to change it.

I changed my name at ss and put my surmane as meymiddle name. Today I went to DMV, to change the name on my liscense and was told that Social security was wrong ( i had my new card with me) and that the only way to change your name was to go to court. The man then issued me a liscense with a hyphenated surname/married name, which is not what was on my ss card. Any ideas as to who is wrong? I argued with him and another lady for a while and he kept telling me tha i was wrong and ss office 'screwed up'.

No, I did not have to write it on my marriage license.

OH NO, I haven't gone to the DMV yet. I was planning on going next week. I hope I don't have this situation too! I asked the man at the SS office and he was positive that I didn't need to go to court....

i did this and all i had to do was go to court, apply, appear before the judge on the date they tell you.. and then get some papers and change your name everywhere else.

Nothing was said about changing your name on your marriage license. hth

I went with a friend of mine to SS and she was told that to make her maiden name her middle name she has to go to court to change it first. Otherwise it's not a 'legal' change... HTH
