QOTD: For those that want to be or are SAHM, what do you plan to do when the baby is older?

Original post by Sonicstef

Just curious what your plans are once the baby is in school or even entirely grown up?

Will you be able to go back into your industry as a professional or do you plan on getting a whole new job? Or do you plan on never working again?

Just curious.

I also wanted to add that sometimes when your children go to school f/t, your life is even more busy than when they are small. When my friend's 2 went to school, she started working P/T. She couldn't leave her house until they were both on the bus and then needed to be home by the time the bus pulled in everyday. There was homework, projects, dance lessons, baseball practice and games, b-day parties, after school play dates, not to mention class trips, class parties and more and more stuff. So while working when the kids are in school seems ideal, it isnt always easy to get those 10-2 jobs.

I've thought about this question too, and I'm not really sure of my answer. I think with our first kid, I would try to work PT, with my Mom helping me out the days I work, but with two or more kids, I can't do that to my Mom, so I think at that point I may be a SAHM.

I think, this is all hypothetical now, that I may change my career at the time our kids go to school. I'm leaning towards the 'counseling' route and may venture into education. But this is all speculative and I'm still so unsure.

I think Jenn and Anna are right though - I think my priorities and career goals will change when I have a little baby in my arms. I also think it depends where Rob will be in his career at that point, and how much 'more' he is bringing home.

I also think we all have intentions of 'doing this or that', but things change and alter our original plans!

My son just started first grade this year so for the first time since he was born I have my afternoons free.
I do wash, clean the house, run errands, food shop, have lunch plans sometimes with other sahm, shop a little.. I'm somewhat active in the PTA, so I have the time to be up at school for the plants sales and bake sales whenever they call me.
I like being available for the pta.
It sounds borring I know, but I love it.
The day goes by VERY fast, before I know it, he's home.

Well I am up against this decision quite suddenly!

My husband and I own a company together, so our situation is a little different. I have never been interested in my work. I only did it so that I could help us build our nest so to speak. I have never been very business motivated and actually cannot stand accounting, sales, customer service, and so on. This is really a blessing I must admit to get the opportunity to stay home for a while and get my interests back in gear. Although I don’t expect much down time for a long time…..

Ideally if all goes well, I will have gotten somewhere with my writing career by the time my child is ready to go off to school and will have developed myself towards things that interest me for the long haul. I would definitely consider a job in publishing at that time I think, or who knows…maybe I’ll be selling books!

Good question though…

I would love to be a SAHM but due to finances I would have to go back to work. But once the kids are grown I would maybe switch to part time.

I am quitting my job to be a SAHM, but I have no idea if I'll like staying or not. My plan is to do consulting work for a while. I really enjoy my field, but still cannot see working full time and commuting while trying to raise a family. I have my Master's in Public Health, and wouldn't switch to another career, it's just a question of how I will continue in this field while raising children.
